I can get a very cheap bmw transmission.
It needs a lot of "stuff" done to fit to a slant, but I am wondering how the ratios suit the slant?

They are:

4.23

2.52

1.66

1.22

1.00

I think it should work ok??

My rearend is a 3.2x , but I might swap in a 2.9 if I can find one.

I hope this car will be an almost daily driver, no racing, but maybe a bit of messing around for fun sometimes

The 4.23 first gear ratio isn't going to be nice you'd need to have a 2.5x rear ratio to mak the 1st gear really useable for a "10" leaving ratio...a "12" is a bit granny and you will get the car rolling and shift at 5 mph....

That being said a 2.5x ratio in direct gear (1.00) will be a dog unless you are cruising at 60-70 mph on flat land.

The other thing I see is the ratio drops between 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd are pretty wide...you'd have a high rpm drop between gears when shifting between them (like a 1300 rpm drop....)

Hmm, ok, so I will just forget this one.

Thanks for the "10 rule"!

1st gear is a bit low compared to 2nd, but I would think those ratios would work very well with a 2.76 rear gear, which is commonly available (Doctordiff.com could ship you one, but $$ shipping?).

What BMW is this from (year, model)?

I am looking at putting a BMW 3 or 5 series rear IRS/axle in my '64 Dart...

It is from a -96 e36 318i, so... should be the same from 90 to 97, I believe.

From a google search, bmw seems to like those ratios, in almost any normal car.

T5 tranny's seem to be pretty well suited for most any inline swap, so you might try to search for one of those where you are if there not to hard to find.

RC is in Norway, so probably not too many T5s around.

The t5 is not too hard to find here, but they are not cheap, as you don't have "old" mustangs stacked up in every junkyard.

I might come across an old s10 or something.

They were in Ford Ranger pickups also, Camaros, and TA's, many things once you stop and think about it.

If you get a 5 speed out of an S-10 or other GM product, make sure it's a T-5 and not a NV3500.

The T-5 is a very nice transmission with lots of aftermarket support. The NV3500 is horribly geared, with a really deep first gear and huge RPM drop between 4 & 5. It would be better off in a pulpwood truck than a car.
