Hello All,
I would like to learn from the experts. This way I can sound like I know what I am talking about when I return my reman starter to the parts store.
I have a few darts, 1968 and 1969. One has the original starter that makes the normal Chrysler starter noise while cranking, and silent as the key is released and it is disengaged from the flywheel and the starter is slowing down.
But, I have had to get a few reman starters, and all have a very very loud growl buzz as the starter is slowing down. I just dont know what to look for to see if it is something I can fix. I have tried Napa, Autozone, and Kragen, and all make the same noise. Is it a bad bushing? The nose bushing looks new on them. Or maybe the brushes just need to wear in? The growl noise does not occour when the starter is actually cranking, only when it is free wheeling and spinning to a stop.
On one of my cars I finally just went and bought a new Denso starter from Mancini Racing. Wow, no noise at all.

As I was younger and trying to go thru a vocational training classes I worked for a major starter/alt rebuilder, the noise you are probably hearing is not a bushing problem, but more likely than not the starter drive (bendix) itself rattling... (Probably cant get a USA made bendix any longer but dont know) Its isnt harmful just sounds like crap.. You MAY be able to help it a little with a small shot of grease on the splines/shaft of the drive end of starter, but that entails taking it apart and removing the starter drive/bendix..

Also it could POSSIBLY be the brush end end plate bushing, but most rebuilders do change the two bushings (one in the nose of starter and the one in the end plate) If its this end the same holds true a shot of grease will 'help' it somewhat. the brushes are normally ran-in @ rebuilders as it only take 20-40 seconds on a free-wheel spin up test..(same way they are tested before being boxed, and or the way AZ,OR,or Napa would test them) The noise doesnt happen during cranking because everything is loaded up with no slack being allowed.

Hope that helps. The new starter is just that, new... the others are rebuilt with the cheapest bulk bought parts.....

If you're sensitive to sounds and noises as I am, you will never be happy with a "remanufactured" starter. They, like all other "remanufactured" parts, are junk. They are abusively cleaned with heavy-duty abrasive that destroys machined surfaces and dimensions. They are thrown together using mixed parts from a bunch of original units that don't play nicely with each other (mismatched gears are always noisy!), and with low-bid, poor-quality consumable parts (bearings, brake washers, etc.). Also, they all get monster so-called "high torque" field coils that spin the starter much faster than its design speed, increasing the hair-raising racket they make. The growl you hear on spindown is a result of all of the above.

If you want your car to sound all the way like it's supposed to sound (and not sound) when starting, and you don't want to play "reman parts roulette" which involves never knowing when the part will fail and leave you stranded with only the fancy "Lifetime guarantee!" paper in the glovebox to make you feel better (it means you get to spend your lifetime replacing cruddy "remanufactured" parts under warranty), then you will need a new starter motor. You can get one from Old Car Parts Northwest -- or from me; I have a couple of extras; send me a PM.
