radiator on it's last leg, looking to buy a new one. i noticed that Champion Cooling seems to offer an aluminum for a little over $200. as i'm running low on funds, i figured this would fit the bill. if i had a little more cash i'd get Dan's recommended radiator: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29514

the thing that sold me was Champions "warranty". i exchanged emails with Geoff, and as i understand, Champions main warehouse is in Lake Elsinore, CA (not oversees), and i also asked him which radiator would fit, and what the "warranty" entailed. here it is:

i am interested in purchasing a radiator from you guys. i have a 1970 plymouth valiant with a 225 slant six, i was looking at item# cc2374, is this the correct radiator for my car? also, i was wondering what does your limited lifetime warranty include? since i live in los angeles, can i drive out to pick it up and not pay shipping?

Its the closest we have and should work fine. Lifetime warranty as long as you own the car and you can pick it up...no Problem

I'd be interested in one of those radiators for my '63 B-Body slant build too. Not too far a drive for me to Lake Elsinore either.

I have one in my '68 barracuda with S/6, I'll have to check but I believe mine's a two core. The three core one might be too thick to fit most cars,and shouldn't be needed. For the price, I'm happy with it,but had the following problems with fitment; 1, the lower hose fitting is 1 3/4, (V-8 sized) not 1 1/2 for the S/6. This is not champion's fault, and maybe it's why they don't list it as fitting a S/6.I made an adapter from a 1 1/2 hose barb- 1 1/2 NPT brass pipe fitting by machining the pipe threads down to 1 3/4 in a lathe. If you have a driver's side mounted alternator, a NAPA P# 8333 rad hose might fit, and has the correct 1 3/4 and 1 1/2 ends. It will interfere with the belt on more common pass. side alts. 2, the side mounting brackets aren't even close to fitting correctly, expect to do some careful measuring and drilling. It's about 2 inches shorter than the stock radiator and the top fitting is closer to the center, so you have to whach out for fan clearance on the upper hose and the trans cooler lines. Also remember the engine torque will cause the fan to become even closer to the upper hose. I used a flex hose for the top one. 3 my radaitor did have about 1 1/2 of twist, top-to-bottom, this is a common complaint from this company, but so far, it's been fine.

well, after more research i discovered that the warranty would be void if you altered the radiator in any way (drilling the mounting holes) from champion

so there goes that.

my next choice was silla 0527aa - Made in china, and does offer a lifetime warranty as well, but is difficult to get a hold of.

AutoZone (i know, i know) offers a Spectra CU527 covered by autozones limited lifetime warranty.

the current radiator i have is a 3 row recore by a guy who lived in my neighborhood, but his shop as long since closed, and it's getting tougher to find someone to trust.

No problem VBW, I would have posted them sooner, but I've been out of town. I guess you could redrill holes in the core support to match the incorrectly placed holes in the rad. Just consider fan clearence before you drill.

the radiator top outlet is on the driver side, i purchased Gates 21794 which should come across and work into the Thermostat housing -Murray 84909

i'll let you all know how it goes!

the clutch fan is from a 76 Mercedes as discussed in this thread:

I'm faced with the same 1 3/4 outlet hookup problem on a U.S. Radiator Corporation 3 row copper/brass radiator (part # 035115ANHZ) being installed in my 65 Dart.

NAPA has a radiator hose repair kit BK 7321200 that contains a barbed coupling that will joint two 1 1/2 hoses.

Napa also has a very short hose NBH 7161 with 1 3/4 ID on one end and 1 1/2 ID on the other end....and it's only 3 1/2 inches long.

The above, together, cost less than $25.

The plan is to cut 3 1/2 inches off my existing hose, put the NBH 7161 on the radiator outlet, shove the coupling into the other end of the NBH 7161, and shove the original cut hose into the coupling.

In other words...... your building your own hose by taking the correct hose for your model car, and shortening it enough to install the coupling & NBH 7161 hose. The NAPA kit includes a rubber cement intended to make your new hose assembly "one piece".

These pieces can be examined online at Napa.com.

The other plan was to find the correct hose with a 1 3/4 id on one end & 1 1/2 on the other. I found 10 possible hoses out of the 4000 hoses NAPA listed.....that's my fallback position if the above approach doesn't work out....It's more pain because I have to get NAPA to order them all & then compare them to my existing hose for turns & bend replication. I'd be glad to forward the list to anyone so inspired to take that approach.

I appreciate having a NAPA that will work with me on problems like this.....

changed the water pump while i was at it. Radiator was off a bit, i had to do some filing to the slots to make it fit correctly. The gates hose and thermostat housing worked out well!

by the way, that's "kilroy was here" drawn on the fan with sharpie.

the clutch fan didn't work out the way i wanted it to :x

DonPal - I just put some vasoline on the bottom outlet and forced the hose over. i put 2 hose clamps and am hoping it works out. not the best solution, i know...

here's my custom catch can (stainless steel canteen from goodwill $2. that's a end cap for a PVC pipe. drilled a hole in it and used a water heater brace as an L bracket with a couple of hose clamps..
