i came across a Holley 2280 carb with the following numbers:

r7890 (from what i understand was for 273 & 318 engines 66-69)
0164 (date?)

i did as much research as i could, i just wanted to see if any of you out there has any more info on this.. the rebuild kits for the 2280 can be had from Walker as i understand?

What additional info are you after?

The best kits come from www.thecarburetorshop.com . Very complete, very expensive. Second preference would be the kits from www.daytonaparts.com .

just looking for part sources and any comments out there. whats the best mpg i could get out of it? are there any special things i have to watch out for in regards to a rebuild? any kind of pdf's out there for me to read?

Those engines got Holleys? I did not know that.

It is jetted for a bigger engine. 16+ mpg?

No. It's a service replacement carburetor, not an original-equipment one.

OK, I know there was Carter BBD's, and Stromberg (WWC's?)

Strombergs are neat looking. I ran a loaner one for a few weeks. They are rather rare.

opened her up today, no mechanical power valve, just a brass plug where it should be.. any thoughts on this?

looks like i should call the CarburetorShop and ask what comes in the kit. If i run it without the power valve it'll run rich and fall on it's face accelerating from a stop light correct?

There's not supposed to be a mechanical power valve. Nothing is missing or faulty or broken. Put the carb back together and run it.

some time ago I purchased a NOS R8431-1 2280 off e bay,, when I opened it up, there was no manual power valve,, I purchased a real cheap used R995-1 2280 off e bay,, and moved the manual power valve and actuating levers from it to the NOS R8431-1

but never installed it as the R40165-1 2280 that I picked up at the pick a part and rebuilt,, was running fine,, the R40165 does have a manual and vacuum PV.

Once I get the 83 D-150 up and running I'll give the R8431-1 a try, it does have bigger jets,, .291 vs .283

installed carb today. idles very nice... verryyy nice.. set timing and adjusted the mixture for maximum vacuum. left it idling in driveway for about 15mins while i packed up the tools and got ready for a test drive.. drove around the block and accelerated fine, ran great.. i put my foot on it down a lone street accelerating up to about 50mph... 20seconds later it began to idle rough and eventually died on me. i got out and saw, and heard gas dripping down the throttle linkage and onto the manifold. i took the air cleaner off and saw drops of gas filling up over the throttle blades... its flooding right? my first guess is that the float is set too high? next guess would be some debris messing with needle and seat? this is the first carb i'm learning about so any suggestions or criticisms are welcome. the history of the carb is not known, as i bought if off of ebay.. i did tear it down and inspect everything. Gaskets looked good, accelerator plunger looked new, floats looked fine (i didn't check the measurements), the jets are .291

i also noticed that since last week, the fuel filter has been filling up all the way, it used to only fill 1/2 of the way up. how do you tell if the fuel pump is going bad? other than it not pumping fuel? is it possible that it can pump too much fuel raising the pressure?

Faulty inlet needle and seat and/or heavy (gas soaked) float, and/or incorrectly adjusted float.

Trash from the tank holding the needle open.

BTW don't use a see through glass filter.
