i got myself a rebuilt carter, and almost ready to fire up the leaning tower of power for the first time since its rebuild. but i got a question before i bolt the carb down.

there is an intake vent on the front of the carb, that goes directly into a small hole into the intake manifold. i cant remember where i had this piece connected to before, but i think it was the rear side of the valve cover?

also i was given a gasket with it, that seems pretty plastic-y, that has 2 slots on either side of the bore, and has that hole for the vent.

now i have a few felpro gaskets laying around, which are a bit thinner then the plastic gasket, have no slots or hole cut into the gasket. my question is which gasket should i be using? what purpose does this vent have. and if i happen to use the felpro, should i be cutting the slots or hole into the gasket?

Good luck. "Remanufactured" carburetors such as the one you bought are usually junk; they usually work very poorly.
Via hose to PCV valve.

Use the thick base gasket with slots. Without the slots you have no vacuum to the choke pull-off or step-up (power) valve.

am i missing it, or does it not describe what that 1 vent is for? but thanks for that, this manual will help when i get into it deeper. i just would like to know what this vent is for, and which gasket i should be using, and if i should be modifying felpro gaskets to work correctly.

thank you slantsixdan. thats what i wanted to hear. and again thanks for the luck. i got the carburator at a shop where i use to work, and i am still friends with all the guys there. as i dont recall who they use for their rebuilts, i am positive that i will not have a problem returning and fixing it, if something shall go wrong.

No, it's not. The castings have been sandblasted. Their anticorrosion coating no longer exists. Before long, this carburetor will be a mess of white powdery "metal mould" corrosion inside.

i had a 1bbl holley that turned into what resembled a barnacle. dan, is there anyway to prevent "Metal Mould"?

I have also wondered about this "coating" also. It must be costly to do the coatings as only a few 'rebuilders' re-coat/plate them back to factory look. I do know what Dan is saying as i have seen carbs like that.... I have wondered about actually powder coating the outside areas of the carb due to the factory coatings being blasted chemo removed... Any thoughts on this Dan? ( coatings could be clear or whatever color ya wanted i suppose... altho a purple carb may look 'Wrong" )

well thank you 64, i worked fairly hard trying to get this thing going, its almost there, 1 thing i really need is the correct choke thermostat. but i appreciate the comment.

Check e bay have seen a couple come through at auction.......will one from a 273 two barrel intake work. I got one of those intakes my wife's grand dad had stored for years in his shop till he passed, it looks to be in good shape. Let me know if you think it will work.............

the manifold i have, is the style where the choke would be exposed to open exhaust fumes, and needs the cup underneath the thermostat

I'll look at it and see what kind it has when I get out to the shop..........
