The car was running beautifully yesterday. I stopped in the middle of the road to move a skateboard and when I went back to turn on the car it sputtered and died.

I cannot get it running. It tries to idle but sputters and shoots raw gas out of the top of the holley 1920 carburetor. Everything appears normal and it seems to be getting fuel supply.

I have checked the gas at the filter and it seems ok.

Checked the valves and pushrods. Things look good.

I have replaced the rotor and cap and it has the same issues. Not sure where to start looking. I am hoping someone on this forum might be able to guide me in the right direction.

Check the timing chain for excess play, sounds like it jumped time.

Check the timing,you may have jumped a tooth or more on the timing chain when shutting it down.

It appears that the rotor is approx 90 degrees clockwise off of #1 at TDC. Is that an indication of jumped timing chain?

It sounds like the rotor is 90° late to hit #6. TDC is the same mark on the damper for #1 and #6.

This is becoming very frustrating.

Checked timing chain, all appears good. Holes align at TDC. Chain is tight. It should be since there has been very little use since it was new. Distributor is working with new points, cap, and condenser.

I took the valve cover off and things look good.

Could this be a carb problem? I cannot get it to start at all now for more than a second before it backfires thru the carb.

If fuel is coming out of the vent on the carb your float is stuck open. Clean the needle and seat or try tapping the area with a rock to dislodge whatever is stuck in there. The former is the right way, the latter will often get you down the road.

FWIW, I've heard of timing jumping since I was a little boy, but have never seen it happen in practice. If the chain is sloppy enough to let a tooth skip I would imagine it wouldn't be capable of turning the camshaft at all.

Thanks fzmax. If the timing jumped a tooth would that be enough not to start at all?! I think it would start but not run smoothly.

I'll start checking the carb....but I feel like I am still at square one, scratching my head!

I'm not sure how may degrees one tooth would be on a slant, but I'd guess around 20. I don't think an engine would run with the cam that retarded, but if it did it would be difficult to start. The slant already has low compression, with the cam that far off cranking compression would be even lower.

If any teeth are the problem I would suspect the plastic gear that drives the distributor over the timing chain. Did you try pulling the cap and having someone crank it and make sure the rotor is still spinning?

Since the subject of your post was that fuel is spitting out of the carb, I'm still thinking that's your problem. No matter where the timing is, fuel should not be coming out of the vents. If you disconnect and plug the fuel line it may run off what is in the carb for a short time. If it does, that;s your problem.

Sorry for the late posting, but I think it might be helpful to know that the condenser can cause serious engine problems and save serious $$$s.

Does it do this while cranking? (spiting fuel out of carb) if so I would say its a carb problem and not a timing issue... Sounds like a stuck float, and a few light raps with the handle of a screwdriver may help, but just pull carb off and check for trash/dirt/debris in the needle and seat.... M2C

I would lean more to that than the timing issue...
