No, but a good HEI module will provide excellent spark well past where you want to rev a stock 225.

I have used a MSD unit for a few years. I have also used a Summit unit. They are both better than stock over 5000 rpm.

There isn't. See HEI upgrade.

Does anyone have a recommendation on what HEI module would be good choice for my car. I definitely think it is the culprit in my car at high rpm. As I creep up towards 6000 rpm it just flutters like something happens to the ignition system. It is just a "cheap" Rock Auto unit.(lesson learned) I ran several runs at 5400-5600 rpm back in May at our race and it seemed fine. As I felt more comfortable that all my parts were going to stay inside I ran a run at 5800 and then 6000 and it just fluttered.
Saturday at the street drags I swapped on a second "cheap" module that I had and ran 3 passes at 5800-6000. But on my 4th run it did the same flutter routine. Everything on the whole ignition system is new. Plugs, cap, rotor, wires, coil and "cheap" HEI modules.
From reading elsewhere it sounds like some of them hit a wall at 5500-6000RPM. Right where I am seeing my problems. Just want some guidance on what might be a good choice.

Thanks,

Rick Covalt

Rick you are barking up the right tree.. I am not going to advise which module to buy but i have had good luck with the ones that dan mentions in his HEI upgrade post.. (the accel one) Altho it was with a different mfg of car, rpm's are rpm's... the cheapy units seem to give up around 5800 or so... never found a point where the accel would hollar uncle.... M2C...

Just a FYI. Most of what you read about a module, or coil giving up at a certain RPM is V-8 RPM. These units count "pulses" . A V-8 at 5000 RPM is the same number of pulses as a 6 cyl at 6,666 rpm. In other words a six cyl can rev higher then a v-8 with the same ign components.

Yes, I have read that a couple of times since I have done 3 of the HEI's. Not sure why I didn't remember the high performance recommendation! Thanks Dan and Charlie & Mroldfart2u. I think I will try a "good" module and see if my issue goes away. Charlie if your right then any module should be good on a slant 6 up to 6500 which is higher than I plan to run.

Rick

Charlie if your right

Rick

Well..... I may not always be" exactly" right, but I'm never wrong.

Charlie is dead on. My guess is that ignition is not your problem, Rick, but I could be wrong.

I put the basic Pertronix on Project V with a bone stock Mopar coil and have had zero issues with ignition or RPM limit. I will probably try an MSD off my other car at some point, but I don't expect to see a difference.

Lou

you are right on, stock stuff is ok ; the energy in an ignition system is ultimately set by the weight of the coil, and short of more current which burns it out, you are limited by that. Chrome box can switch more amps, so smaller ballast R ok but coil is not ok. a few minutes and it is too hot. Taking out ballast OK if current regulated, (HEI) but not OK if not. How much that buys you is TBD>see later. But some believe 100A or 16 V helps things---It helps things burn out. It seems mopar won many 8krpm drag races (er?) without chevie boxes. ...even without boxes period. (Must have been lucky ?) , and 8's take more spark per RPM, less time to recharge coil. time to charge is proportional to L/R , small R helps (race coil and low ballast R and super box) , but big L hurts. Take your pick, fast charge or high energy; both = hot coil. A six going 5 grand is like an eight going 7 grand, another aspect, 6 has more time to charge coil. If the current through a ballast resistor /coil reaches full design level in time , set by 12V available, (it will on stock parts and reasonable 8 cyl RPM , 6 a breeze) regulating that current is not needed. Same max amps, ,all the coil can handle, is set/reached by coil primary in either case . E=1/2 LI squared; big L = big coil, which may have heavier wire , so more I ok too. Ratio the same, time the same, big coil wins. HEI coils not so big, regulating current a way to use small cheaper coil , less copper. $ saved for GM.
But longer time to fully charge a big coil unless box better, current up and resistor reduced(racing) . So weigh your coils, use chrome box if more than stock amps, (lower ballast R) .

What gets me more than all that is MSD (Multiple spark discharge) Dumb idea, what good is a 2nd spark 20 degrees late? Bullshit Baffles Brains, for a while. You need one good spark at the right time. But guys who know nothing about all this see Joe Hot shot with MSD, out comes 300$. I have magnetic fuel superchargers, VX -6 , Slick 50, "top oil" and magic air cleaners for sale. k&N for 60$ Its an AIR CLEANER!...]
Chinese mopar race distributors wipe upper bushings --no way to get oil to it, none on it from china. QC=zero. Remember real iron distributors with oil port cap on side?

Been there since flattie dodge and first hemi..

Yeah, gosh, and they did it with 1960s oil and tires and gasoline and stuff! I guess that means we should all be using breaker points and bias-ply tires because someone won a race with those things fifty years ago.
