I may tighten the valves even a little more. I have seen the valve lash listed different for the MP .490 cam and did not know where I got the .028 / .032 at. Well I found out where last night. The old MP Performance catalog(1992) shows the lashes at .028 / .032. As a matter of fact it lists the .460, .490, and the .528 at those lashes. Then I see some places list it at .016 / .020. I think I will try that and see how it runs.

I have tried to tighten my Clifford up and it will greatly affect idle quality, and not in a good way. :oops:

i ran everyone of those cams over the years and even now with a comp 256deg@.050 i still run .016 int and .020 ex, i found the .028/.032 lash slowed the car,she felt strong but the time slips showed the difference.

As I mentioned in the other thread, we had a great time at the street drags last Saturday. What I didn't tell you was that I had two red lights in the time trials. A -.065 and a -.025! So now I don't even know how to start!! Anyway, they called for anyone that wanted to make another T & T run come on up. So we all went and I ran a .064 light. That's more like it. I think these Nitto tires hold so well I just need to make some runs to get used to having a car that launches without any spinning.

The car pulls great right up to 6000 RPM where I want to shift, but then the HEI module ( I think) takes a dump. But I remember the MP .528 seeming to hit a wall in Ryan's Dart about 5500. This .490 didn't feel that way at all. I do have the valves set at .016 & .020. The idle is somewhat worse but not intolerable. I will have the new Accel HEI performance module tomorrow.

I also have had a little oil leak from the very start. Nothing big but I wasn't real happy about it. Then on the next to the last run Saturday, I noticed the car smoking the whole way down the track a little. Oh no! this can't be good! But when I arrived home. I jacked up the car and took a look at my now worse oil leak. Of course I figure it will be the rear main seal, but such was not the case. I just never tightened up the oil pan from the start! I now remember putting the pan on with some silicone in the strategic areas, and just snugging it up until the silicone would set up a bit. Well as you can guess, I installed the engine and never did tighten down the pan. I lost 2 bolts and at least 6 others I ran out with my fingers! That will definitely let oil blow out and land on your headers, and make a nice trail the whole way down the track.

Other than my dumbness the car ran great! It ran a best of 14.75 and I broke 90 MPH.(Best yet) The only change from our Mason Dixon race was the addition of about 35# of mufflers. With some cool air and a good module to allow me to shift at 6000-6200, I should be able to hit a 14.5

Hope to take it up to South Mtn (Quarter Aces) next Friday at the Chyslers at Carlisle event. Ryan may bring his Race car too. Stop by and say hello if you are there.

Charlie, I think we installed 4 degrees advanced. Not sure what that is? I'm thinkin it may have been 102. My .490 is at 98 I think.

Tightening the lash effectively makes the cam bigger on the duration, so the fact it picked up some shows that the engine could use a bigger cam. It really looks good with that blue color, hope mine turns out that slick.

I had a Chevy guy stop by 2 times while in the staging lanes and tell me how nice it looked! I know that was a big compliment coming from him. The second time he wanted the name and number of the guy who painted it. Sounds like he needed something painted.

The car will get a bigger Cam as well as a big bore long rod combo in the future. This was just a decent first shot at getting it going. The next engine will be a little more serious.

Just ran the car down the road after washing down the oil underneath and I think it looks good. It also bumped off of the 6000 RPM shift light 2 times without so much as a flutter! It may be once the mudule gets hot it gives up a little bit.

I fired up the car this evening and left it warm up. Then I reset my valves to .020/ .030. I will give that a try and see how it runs. I moved my fuel line up about an inch further above the cylinder head to get it a little further away from the heat. It runs parallel to my valve cover and is now about 3" up from the head. I did put some insulation around it as well just to keep it a little cooler. There is a pile of heat that comes up off those headers! I'll mount my new Accel HEI module and set my timing tomorrow, and we should be ready to race again on Friday.

When I shut off my engine my fuel pressure gauge goes up over a 10 minute period from 5 1/2# to about 9 1/2# I thought it was from the heat of the headers and engine getting to my fuel line. But as the previous thread says, I moved the line up about an 1" higher than it was and I put insulation around the whole thing up to the carb inlet. Is this something to worry about? I am guessing it is because the carb itself is getting so hot when it is shut off? I know one of you will tell me for sure what is going on.

Also I turned on my electric fan while it was setting there to blow air over the part of the fuel line that is not insulated at the front of the engine and it made no difference.

PS It is 95 degrees here today.

i would think the gauge is faulty, at 9.5# the pressure should over come the needle and seat which woulod push fuel up the bowl vents.

Gauge seems to work perfectly fine and is brand new. (I know it could still be bad) If I just pump the throttle a couple times it drops right down. If I leave it set for an hour the gauge will peak and as soon as the engine cools a little it begins to drop and will go right back down. When I start it up it is right at 5.5# every time.

I think at zero pressure the gauge is reading almost 1# so it could be off 1# the whole way through. It may only have 8 1/2# on it.
