Any one use an accelerometer to check the performance, or any 'tweaks' on their mill?

I've had a few guys tell me they are fairly accurate.

Anyone got a comment?

My neck makes a pretty good accelorometer......

I've taken a look at how these things work and what the 'pro' model displays...compared to the price of a day on a dyno or 5 runs at Woodburn this thing would pay for itself in 1 week of jet/spring/distributor tweaking....

It's like having an instant dragstrip or dyno right there with torque specs, HP specs, G ratings, 1/4 mile ET, and saved data too....


Gotta find something to sell to get one...

Accelerometers are neat. In my graduating class someones senior project was an accelerometer in a rocket. After launching said rocket, pulling the data from the accelerometer and a smidgen of calculus the height curve was plotted.

The device itself is quite simple, yet very precise and sensitive. About the size of a quarter, they look similar to a typical IC chip. There are several different styles, mainly varying in the form of their output signals.

So you read acceleration directly from the device. Along with the math and perhaps known engine parameters you calculate the rest.

They have several flavors, $99 for the basic one, and $249 for the 'pro'.
It's pretty cool that you put it on your dash and can get an estimated 1/4 mile time, your torque curve, your HP curve, and 0-60, 60-0 times, G pad rating, loss of traction in some models...there's enough data there to do say a jet change and see if it actually hinders you, or recurve the distributor and 'plot' what 'helped'. With only a drive around the block and writing down the saved data from the prom.

When I get some $$$ I'm going to get one, I think this would be a very useful tool for tuning things in and getting some numbers to work with....

DI, whats the brand name of these things? I wanna check them out for some ideas. I'm curious as to how they are mounted, cause all it takes is one little vibration and those things can go nutty. Or they probably take care of vibration by filtering it out electrically.

I have used the G-Tech basic and have checked it at the track. If you set it right (not hard), it is within 0.1 sec in the 1/4, but the MPH usually reads high by 2 MPH or so. Definitely worth the money as you said.

I recommend the new pro model as you can download logs to your computer - will be infinitely more useful and easy.

My basic G-tech crapped out a few months back so I need to see about sending it back.

Motorola, Measurement Specialties Inc., Honeywell Sensotec (just to name a few) all make good vibrating silicon beam accelerometer-on-a-chip solutions. With a micro (you're choice), an A/D, a little math, and time, you should be able to coble something together...

Gtech was the one I was looking at. Looks pretty straight forward.



'Apple story'....Back when I was in highschool, one of my buddies was taking his 3rd year in French, and tended to make these 'off color' remarks when things went bad, or needed some interjection. One day my dad's Feather Duster stalled out due to cold start/choke setting problems, and he commented that even a Vaux would be able to run more reliably than this 'apple of dung'.... Two days later he was suspended from class because during a 'conversational exchange' in French class he said this 'translated phrase' while talking to the teacher : "I have a purple twinkie with cream filling. Would you care to eat it?"

mnecaise, I'm well aware of what it would take. I've worked with microcontrollers for some time now (see my tachometer post in the "other" forum). I personally was thinking the Analog Devices brand accelerometers because you can get free samples of those and have an easier to deal with linear output not pwm.

I always thought the best one was a $20 on the dash and a challenge to the passenger to "get it". If they can, then you are not accelerating fast enough...

Actually that was common when my parent's were in high school. About the time I got to drive, the big thing with the 'muscle car' owners was to put a beer bottle about 6" in front of one of the front tires and see who had enough 'ummph' to lift the front off the ground put the front tire over the bottle without breaking it then stop before the rear tire smashed the bottle....

I suppose soon we'll have to ask Doc to post a copy of the 'Intersection Art' article....
