Found by Google a page from Mopar Muscle mag that had the BW trans. I couldn't get it to load.

Chrysler used the Borg Warner trans until the 833 came out in '64. Most stick Max Wedge cars had the heavy duty 3 speeds in them because the Borg Warner was a piece of crap. Yes, they shifted nicely, but even when the Super T-10 came out later they were still a weak trans.

I can guarantee you that no one used a Muncie or a Borg Warner in any kind of fast race car unless they had to by class rules. Hell, I even shelled out a T-10 in a stock 350 4 bbl Camaro I used to own.

Sox and Martin, Dick Landy, Herb McCandless, The Ramchargers all used slick shifted 833's until the Lenco came along.

There was an article a few years ago stating that S&M used a Ford Toploader in one of their SS Barracuda's. Herb McCandless himself came on Moparts and posted that neither he nor S&M EVER used anything but 833's.

I still have the adapter pilot bearing in my tool box for putting a Toploader behind a Chevy motor.

And to think I thought the ATF in a manual gear box was a "new" thing....

The Challenger in question, was bought in 1973 with about 25,000 miles on the clock. When Ron (the owner of the Shell station) checked with Beaverton Dodge, ATF was the recomended fluid for a 4 speed. This would have been about July 4th, 1973.

Edit: I found the issue. The hub on the mainshaft, in between the 2nd gear and the OD gear, was rubbing on the back edge of one of the gears on the countershaft.

I've been running regular 80w90 gear oil in mine for almost a year, no problems whatsoever. I've talked to several mechanics that said you can run pretty much anything in them, ATF, gear oil, or motor oil.

For anyone who may find this while searching later on, the root of the problem was found with the snap-rings at the rear of the mainshaft. Thus allowing the mainshaft to move forward and contact the countershaft.

I certainly will, no doubt about it! Both my current rigs have 4speeds, and I'm picking up another truck soon that will be getting an 833 as well...
