currently, the trans (a904) in my 70 valiant is weeping fluid from every place.. i have a spare thats been sitting in the backyard for awhile. i'm thinking of going through it with a seal kit and rebuilding the trans. I'm wondering if you guys have any tips for me on the project. Sources for parts? Is there anything special i should do to it while it's apart? my knowledge of transmissions is fairly low, but i do have a knack for learning as i go along.

thanks guys

I was in roughly the same place as you last year when I took the plunge and rebuilt 3 904s in a single month. Transmissions used to scare me, but not any more. Get a factory service manual and a clean workspace and you will be fine. The 904 is actually a very simple transmission. You will need a slide hammer to get the front pump out.

I got most of my rebuild parts from Makco transmission. They are an online retailer. While you are in the transmission, I strongly recommend you install a Transgo shift kit and verify you have part throttle kickdown.

Clean/degease the trans and try to find where the leak is coming from,it might be something simple like the O-ring in the dipstick tube.

Leaks coming from speedo oring, kickdown/shift seal and the owner before me over torqued the pan bolts so 2 of them dont tighten. I tried different bolts, its the housing thats ruined.

How do I id part throttle? Casting numbers?
