Who remembers the "Good Ole Days"...?

The ones where we had folks pushing the envelope looking for the fastest ET and MPH possible...

The ones where we had car counts in the 20's and had enough really fast cars to put on a "Fast Four" race at the end of a race weekend...

Some say times have changed and those days are long gone... :(

NOT!!

Granted,... Some of the "Big Boys" (or BadBoyz... ) that were the ones to watch back then have either moved on to other things or are supporting other adventures for the betterment of the sport overall,...

The guys like:

Mike Jeffrey - First in the 10's
Charles Myers - First in the 9's
Tom & Leighton Drake - Fastest Doorslammer ET @9.85
Cox Brothers - 9.97
Mark Goodman & Brent Laney - Team Green
Howard Davis - C/Alcohol record @ 11.27

Guess what!? :o

Mike Jeffrey still has his 10 second '68 Valiant... It's sitting on stands under a tarp right behind his Slant 6 Stock Eliminator Mirada...

Charles Myers sold his Arrow, but the hardware that made that car so fast is still sitting under his workbench while he supports his two sons in their Smallblock Stock Eliminator Miradas and he finds time to put together his own Slant 6 Stock Eliminator Mirada...

Leighton Drake has turned down the boost on the Simca, but that's easy to turn back up... And that Pro Mod Rampage is just waiting for some love and attention... Just needs the right driver that ain't skeered to go fast!

Mark Goodman and Brent Laney have come back to Slant 6 drag racing after way too many years away by not only retrieving both original Team Green cars, but building a Front Engine Dragster to boot!

Howard Davis has finally done what folks have been talking about for years and years by actually building a billet aluminum head for his Slant 6 engine! It's been on the dyno (with impressive results  ) and he plans to bring this new monster to Clay City in October if initial track testing goes as planned.

Then there are the mainstays of fast Slant 6 drag racing like Seymour Pederson, Will Burns and Ron Hamby that have been around from the beginning and have ET's in the low 11's...

Seymour has handed his record setting blue Valiant over to dedicated Slant 6 racer Ryan Covalt who just towed it all the way from Pennsylvania to Elk Creek, Virginia behind his Slant 6 powered '72 Dart Swinger! :D

Will Burns' Oh So Low Notchback Barracuda is still running strong and he just re-set his own A/Alcohol MPH record at 119 MPH... Oh yeah,... He's now building a turbo motor for it too!

Ron Hamby has kept his '66 Dart in the Winner's Circle year after year by being consistent and reliable in the low 12's and high 11's on alcohol, but you can still see the glimmer in his eye when he talks about that 11.14 NOS pass at Hamilton and how close that was to the coveted "10 Second Club"...

And what about these "Young Upstart Turbo Fellers" with them "Hair Dryers"...!?

How's about TurboValiant with a 10.74 or Shaker223 with his 11.02...?

I haven't even mentioned the Killer Bees fast guys like "Record Collector Mark Etheridge" or Dave Mueller in his '65 Valiant wagon with his 11.54...

With the exception of the Killer Bees and Turbo Fellers just mentioned,... Everyone on this illustrious list have raced at Clay City, KY at one time or another!

Here's the "Aha Moment"! (There's ALWAYS a catch, huh? )

I want to put on a "Fast Four (Or More )" race at Clay City this year! :D

1. Howard Davis has stated that Clay City is a priority for him and his new billet motor.

2. Will Burns loves showing up and pushing hard. He has said that he's in if I can put this together.

3. Ryan Covalt has proven that he's dedicated and wants to put down some low ET's of his own in Seymour's Valiant.

4. Ron Hamby is ALWAYS at Clay City! :D I don't think it would take much convincing to get him to hook up that nitrous bottle again...

Could we convince guys like Mark and Brent to pull all the way out from the Mid West for this..?

What about Mike Jeffrey? Would he be willing to dust off his original Buzzin' Half Dozen car for this..?

I think Charles Myers and Leighton Drake are more of a long shot given where they both are with their racing operations currently...

Them two "Young Upstart Turbo Fellers" ain't all that far away from Clay City...

I need your help to breathe some new life back into the Clay City race! Talk it up, make some phone calls, post here with some smack talk or ideas... (shut up Cookie! )

We'll do a "Fast Four" at Clay City with the four lowest qualifiers... So, you folks with high 11 or low to mid 12 second cars may get in...

Come out and Run with the Slants!! :D :D

Anything constructive about this "Fast Four" idea! Sheesh!

There's enough smack talk and bashing going on between me an Cookie elsewhere throughout this forum...

We're talkin' off-line 'bout sumthin' to git ourselves ready...

And yes! Clay City is gonna be the "Grudge Match Race"!!

Me & Cookie is gonna go at it,...

And I'm hopin' that Howard Davis and Barry Harrison will have themselves a Re-Match too! :D

The other big Slant 6 Grudge Match I wanna see is 'tween Bagel & Possum!

'Course, this right here don't look none to promisin'... :(

If you ain't gonna have Da Tuna ready fer Cedar Falls that weekend,... You could always come on over to Clay City with Cookie and borrow back The Piggie to take on Mr. Parker...

Me & him'll be real gen'rous & give you boys a head start seein' as how we'll be a lot faster'n you...

Hmmm,... This idea right here may have some merit to it...

Another Famous Slant 6 Grudge Match that's been talked about and even had T-shirts made up fer it is,...

Mark Goodman versus Meril Bruner!! :D

Y'all member them "No Meril" T-shirts..?

Looks like I got me some more phone calls ta make...

C'mon Y'all!! Git with me on this!! :D

I guess Rob will need a new tarp for that one!!

Yes Wayne! Not 30 years! 29 years 9 months! There's a big difference.

Possum ??? Is he still racing? Haven't seen him for a while. Hope he does pull to Clay City.

Rick

I wouldn't mind putting Meril on the trailer again. You would think he would get tried of this happening time after time.

This sounds very cool, Rob. Would love to see some fast cars on that fast track.

I'll be there for sure, but likely won't break 13.00 in anything I have. I'll bring something new, though...

Lou

Love it!! :D

That's two confirmed Grudge Matches!! (You KNOW Meril will be there... )

Hey Mark,

Didn't you and Mike Jeffrey stage one of the first "Grudge Matches" early on...? Maybe we can work it out for you to have a "Double Header" against Meril & Mike both! :D

You'd bedder git signed up fer this one Bagel! Let's call Possum & rattle his cage a lil' bit!

(You KNOW Cookie needs yer help fer this one anyways...  )

Only one left is Howard Davis versus Barry Harrison!
(Howard's on board. Just need to nudge Barry... )

I called Barry Harrison today... Then I called Howard Davis...

There's plenty of "Trash Talk" between them two fellers! That's fer sher!

Conversations went kinda sorta like this:

Rob: "We would love to have you come to Clay City this year Barry."

Barry: "Well, ya know,... I've been kinda outta the Slant 6 thing for awhile... I've been playin' with these two SRT-4s..."

Rob: "That's a shame. Howard Davis has built a brand new Billet Head motor and has said that he would like to have a re-match with you from the last time you went head to head..."

Barry: "A billet head, huh? It'll take more than that for him to beat me."

Rob: "Hmmm,... That's not what Howard says... He mentioned something about a "Baby Bottle" and a case of beer... Would you like to have his phone number so that you two can discuss it?"

Barry: "He has my number. He's just afraid to call!"

***** BREAK *****

Rob: "Hey Howard! I just talked to Barry Harrison... (interrupted)"

Howard: "That old blow hard!? He probably hasn't touched that car since the last time we raced! He just got lucky with that one! Is he ready for a re-match or not!? Did you tell him to bring his "Baby Bottle"?

Rob: "Well,... He mentioned something about a new transmission... (interrupted again  )"

Howard: "He's been talking about that transmission for over 4 years! He thinks that's gonna give him the edge and cut half a second off his E.T... He'll NEED that half a second now! He's just afraid to race me again!"

Rob: "He did mention that he hadn't spoken to you in quite awhile..."

Howard: "I'll have Jay (Jason Davis) give him a call! That'll get him started!"

(I may have taken a little "dramatic license" with the above conversations, but that really is pretty close to what was said. )

Howard Davis has his new engine in the Dart and everything looks good for its first test & tune this weekend! :D

Hopefully a couple more phone calls to Barry will inspire him to set aside them FWD Neons with "Hair Dryers" and focus on what's really important: His '66 Valiant that has run 10.90s on the "Baby Bottle".

Howard and Barry...? Check! :D

Hmmm,... Who to focus on next... :?

Yoo Hoo!... Oh Bagel... Possum sez you're a "Scaredy Cat" if you don't show up at Clay City this year...!

Howard and Jay Davis took their "Hillside Six" Dart Sport out to the track for some initial testing of the new "Billet Motor" this weekend. :D

They made a few passes, but had a couple little issues to work out (not necessarily engine related).

Testing will continue around his grandchildren's Junior Dragster racing. (You can guess which one takes priority... )

Ron "Possum" Parker didn't make it to Knoxville for the Slant 6 race there this weekend... (I'm not about to call and give him a hard time about it though. I chickened out at the last minute and didn't make it either. Now I'm on all the East Coasters' "Hit List"!  )

Bagel (slantzilla) has been pretty quiet lately as well,... :?

The way I figger it, they're either...:

A. Doin' some schemin' off-line in pre-E-ation fer their Grudge Match at Clay City...

B. Both got other things goin' on that take priority over Slant 6 Racin'... :?

C. Both are just plumb tired of this stuff and wish I'd just leave 'em alone...

I'm hopin' fer A,... bettin' on B,... an' sure do hope it ain't C!

Let's see,... Who else can I nudge a little bit to come to Clay City for a Grudge Match...? :?

I haven't called Mike Jeffery about takin' on Mark Goodman yet... Mark's gonna be there with his "No Meril" T-shirt... Hmmm...

At this year's Mo-Kan race where "Team Green" made their great comeback to Slant 6 racing after too many years away,... Seymour "The Minnesota Mad Man" Pederson showed up and took home all the marbles. It was his "Final Appearance" in his blue '62 Valiant race car before handing the keys over to Ryan Covalt...

Having Seymour show up and steal the thunder from their great comeback must have really made Team Green MAD!

I'm sure one (or all) of The Team Green Crew wants a piece of that blue Valiant! You'd better look out Ryan! Them "Ozark Outlaws" from the Mo-Kan race are comin'... And Hell's comin' with 'em!!
