I've been searching, but the search function isn't working properly for me again.

I recall reading on some forum about using a Jaguar fan clutch on an early-A with radiator clearance issues, and that it was a bolt-in to both the water pump and a Mopar fan.

I think someone also used a Mercedes clutch, but the fan mounting hole pattern was different.

Can someone re-enlighten me?

Might as well ask another question.........

Has anyone installed an 18" fan on an early-A? It looks like it will clear, but maybe I'm missing something.

None of the regular American-type clutch fans will work. Mercedes or Toyota parts are required to have a shot at fit, and even then it's not guaranteed. Previous threads here, here, here, here.

i have a clutch fan from a 1977 Merecedes Benz 280SE as discussed in the first thread that dan linked. if you want it, it'll be $15 plus shipping. i paid $15 for it at the pick a part and it took some time to pull it, since the ignition was left open and the motor kept spinning for each bolt i tried to loosen. finally had to pry a pipe that i keep in my toolbox between the alternator and fan blade. i did not use it because i already dumped in a aluminum radiator and have the AC 6 (or 7?) blade fan. seemed overkill to me.

Sorry for not responding. Just like I often can't search old posts, the new post search function usually fails. I don't understand why I'm having this problem with my computers when nobody else is.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to do some further research before I decide what to do. I found the Jaguar clutch info on another Mopar forum and want to check that out too.

Do you happen to know its length? The post on the other forum lists the Jaguar XJ-6 part as being 2-1/2", but I couldn't find a Hayden drawing to verify that dimension. A call to their catalog sales was fruitless, and I was unable to work through their automated system to find an engineer.

There is 2-3/4" clearance between the new aluminum radiator and the water pump, so the Jaguar unit would be a tight fit. However, the Hayden Jaguar part, made in the USA is only $35 new at rockauto.com, so if it had to be replaced it would be a bit more palatable than the foreign sourced MB part at $107. If the MB part would give more clearance, the potential replacement cost wouldn't be much of an issue.
