hi Bear R.here .i have a BIG problem.ya,easy out broke off in a bolt of my exhaust manifold .im right there too.ready to put my 67 coronet slant six parts back together.i should be driving this by now but cant seem to get a grip on this ive even bought some colbolt bits.but,man,its only taking down a 32" of an inch an hour.seems like it anyway .any advice.?thanks and God Bless everyone.Bear R.-

Cut a slot in the EZ-out, turn clockwise to unlock. Blow the remainder of the stud out with your cutting torch.

Don't have a cutting torch or something to cut the slot with?

Head on or off?

Off: take it to a machine shop.

On: Remove head, take it to a machine shop. :shrug:

Too many people who were born on third base actually believe they've hit a triple.

the only thing that will cut out the easy out is a grinding stone. the little ones like on a dremmel. Hopefully you have a better option than that. if you can hold onto the easy out but the bolt is still stuck I suggest hitting it with a propane torch to get it good and warm then soaking it with PB blaster. Not sure what is in the stuff but we used it exclusively on exhaust bolts at the transmission shop.

OK,this works...sometimes..
You will need ;
1/A little luck
2/ A welder,mig or stick
3/A nut larger than the stud or bolt to be removed.The manifold bolts are 5/16" from memory so use a 3/8 nut
4/More luck.
Now,sit the nut over the broken mess you have there,hopefully you have a little bit of something protruding from the manifold to locate the nut on? Then hit the hole in the nut with the welder,just a short zap,this should attach the nut to the stud...practise first before you do the manifold so you get the right current.Spray the hot area with penetrating oil and gently turn the nut,hopefully the ezy out will back out or even better the bolt.Its a hard process to explain,but believe me,I have used it plenty of times with broken studs in aluminium castings with decent success.Good luck my friend! You might be able to break it apart with a hammer and chisel because they're brittle (as you've found out).

I've used dremels. Either the mini cut-off wheel to make a screwdriver slot, or the mini carbide bits to grind them away.

I've also ground the broken bolts away with the tiny carbide bits.....

EDM works well. I have never seen an EDM tool for a reasonable price. EDM can cut out a broken bolt with no harm to the surrounding metal. Its most useful for general metal shaping, eg a square hole.

Try a small prick punch placing it on outer edge of easyout where you can get a little purchase on it, tap tangent to direction of its rotation, (clock ways to release) alternating side to side, and a spritz of PB Blaster.

I have never tried this,, but our Mac tool man said to use a "new" masonary bit small as you can find.(3 1/6 ?) I think it may fracture more than drill the offending broken easy out.

plus one on welding nut on - I had to do the same when putting headers on my 01 Ram- use a nut that is SMALLER so you dont weld a nut to the block ! the heat from welding helps too- works like a jillion bucks every time I need to do it.
