I'm getting a trailer and I wonder how much weight my truck can pull. ( 1977 in-line 6 ). The hitch rates at 5,000 lbs, but my mechanic says 3,000 is probably max. Any thoughts?

Half ton? 3/4 ton? 1 ton? single or duals? My 3/4 ton crew cab did fine with 7k and 5k in the bed, worn out /6, 727 auto. Ran 65-70 and got 11 mpg to boot!

It can pull a lot more than it can stop

Rust collector is correct. A 1/2-ton pickup can drag quite a lot, but stopping is a problem. I loaded my '73 D100 over it's GVW and then hooked up a tow dolly to tow my '71 Swinger. It went. Slowly. Stopping was the biggest issue. If you tow more than 1000 lbs in many places you must have trailer brakes to be legal.

Ok, this is just MY opinion, assuming it is a 1/2 ton truck.

I would say 1800-2000lbs without brakes, and 3800-4000 with brakes.

If it is legal??? I dunno, but it works fine over here...

Have to run... and find my flameproof undies...

Oh, btw, it's a 1/2 ton. Does that changed the tow weight? One guy told me it could pull 5k, which seems like a lot. Thanks so much for the stopping info-I'll have to be sure the rig has brakes!!

85 1/2 ton shortbed. 3.21 rear with automatic.

I tow my 65 valiant @ 2600#, on a steel deck trailer and it towed very nice. Probably over 4000# total towing. The trailer has brakes on both axles and stops very well also. I would not want to tow up any mountains for sure! But out on the interstate it was doing fine towing 60-65MPH until I blowed the upper hose in 103 degree heat.

The truth of the matter is that if you are going to tow far and or up any large hills or long grades you need a V-8. Or a modified slant 6 could do a decent job. I always worry about the load & heat I am putting on a stock 904 tranny? If I was going to tow a lot with a slant six, I'd prefer a manual transmission with OD and 4:10 or 4:30 gears.Just my opinion!

Rick

5000 lbs shouldn't be a problem

I towed my Valiant from PA to CA (over hills too) with my toyota 4 cylinder..............

Just make sure you have trailer brakes...

Towed home an 88 F-250 longbed on a trailer behind my 82 D-150 one time.

Stopping took some planning ahead.

I towed a cat D8 without driveshafts around the yard with my aspen, but I would not recommend it... Stopping involves jumping out of the car, and hope you can jam a piece of wood between the track, and sprocket...

Rust, you're funny! I'll keep some pieces of wood in the truck just in case.

Hey, will I need a brake controller? Clearly I am a total novice.

If you get a trailer with electric brakes you will need a brake controller.
