Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the front band in a 904 without removing the trans from the vehicle? The friction material fell apart and i need to replace the band. Also, would it be recommended to replace the rear band as well? steve

Nope. The pump needs to come out to get at it.

I was accually able to get the front band out this morning. If you slide it back almost to the rear band it has just enough space to pull through. The rear band looks like it needs to be replaced also. Can the rear band be removed if i take off the tail housing and remove the rear band strut assembly?

Steel band then, not iron. That's good that you could get it off of there.

After talking to Chuck this morning, he suggested that a steel front band could be reinstalled with the valve body off. The old iron bands would be virtually impossible to remove or install without breaking them.

Report back on how things go. I don't think you can get the rear band out, but then I didn't think you could get the front band out either. Good to know!
I always pull the transmission out to go after the bands, if just to inspect everything else. Even when the frictions look fine, I've replaced them. Just too much hassle pulling it to forgo the opportunity to refresh the transmission while in there... project creep.

I was accually able to install the new front band without having to pull the trans. It was a steel band. I used part of a metal coat hanger and connected it to the band to pull it around and into place.
