hi, i've been overhauling the interior of my 1962 plymouth valiant signet 200. as i worked under the dash i noticed a mysterious toggle switch under the steering column. well out of sight and hard to reach, it has a double braided black wire that goes across to the passenger side firewal and disappears to . . . . who knows where?

what does this switch do? in the faint recesses of my 60 year old mind, i recall being 15 years old and seeing a similar switch on the column of my dad's 62 signet 200. but have no idea what it is for.

is it a cloaking device switch?

Not a factory item. Probably a previous owner's anti-theft switch, heading over to the passenger side of the engine bay to intercept one or another of the ignition primary wires.

(Psst: we're not supposed to talk about the cloaking device, remember? Shh!)

I agree with Dan. When I bought my '64 convertible, I found someone had added such a switch under the dash.

See if it switches off your tail lights.
