Ok so I'm helping a friend liquidate some of his "junk" and stumble across an aluminum 225 slant six. It is complete from the carb to the oil pan and also has an aluminum offenhauser 4 barrel intake. The story goes that he removed the engine in/around '68 w/ 40k miles and its been in his garage/shop ever since. What would be the best way to sale this? Restored or as is? What venue would be best for this?

If it was me, I'd probably sell it as/is. Everybody is going to have a different idea as to what to do with this motor, and anything you do will be wrong.
The other answer would be. If you decide to do anything, figure on a total overhaul. Buyers are not going to be interested in a "sort of" rebuild.
Please post when the decision is made. There's much interest out here in the aluminum engines.

Depends on where it's located. Shipping distance is going to influence the final sale price. If it can be turned over by hand, that will help, but if it's locked up.......

Potential buyers will want to know the condition of the deck (where the head meets the block). This was a common problem area for aluminum engines that have been stored for long periods of time. If this area is good, then you have a great find. If it's eaten away, you may have a pile of scrap aluminum.

I'm located in southwest virginia. I'm going to work on getting better access to it today. Could you give me best case situation? ie - if its in good condition (not corroded) is it going to be worth the hassle?

I don't know... others on the board have bought and sold these engines, someone will chime in with a price.

Like anything, a lot depends on how badly someone wants it at the time you are selling it!

You might make a tidy sum, but you won't retire on it!

It really depends on too many factors to give an accurate guess. Don't start counting dollars yet -- the engine would have to be taken apart to get a reliable sense of its condition, which will determine its worth (in time/effort and money).

If it's in basically sound condition, then the question becomes what you are planning to do with a slant-6 engine. What application (type of vehicle), driven in what manner (street, race...)? What kind of buildup do you have in mind (stock, hopped up)?

I appreciate the responses - the owner of the engine is having me liquidate the entirity of his collection. He has lots of engines, transmissions, rear ends and that just scratches the surface of all the stuff i'm having to go through. There are several old bmw motorcycles bla bla bla. I'm basically just trying to get as much out of this stuff as possible without taking it for scrap. I will have no problem getting this on a stand and taking it apart to figure out if its a solid piece or worthless. It is just going to take some time to get everthing moved to get access to the engine. I have the offenhauser intake in hand and it looks pretty old but othewise good condition. Would the correct 4 speed transmission add any value if sold as a package?

So I've got the engine home - it has a holley carb on it and a cast number of 2121 followed by 355 or 335. I also managed to find 2 4speed transmissions marked "64 barracuda" w/ bellhousings.

I delivered to a beer distributor there once. Miller? Bud? I can't remember!

Makes you wonder what cam is in there.
