A Napa Gold air filter for a 74 Duster costs $6 (Part Number: FIL 2011) and is in stock at my local Napa.
A K&N air filter for a 74 Duster costs $50 (Part Number: BK 7354313 or E-1000 on K&N's site) and isn't in stock. It also requires a $15 filter cleaning and oiling kit (part number K&N 99-5050).

So, I can pay $6 a year for a disposable paper element air filter that filters just as good or better than the K&N, or I can pay $65 (potentially plus shipping) for a K&N air filter and keep purchasing the $15 filter cleaning/oiling kit when the 8 oz oil and 12 oz cleaner bottles run out.

$65 = almost 11 years of Napa filters versus one K&N filter. Every time a cleaning/oiling kit must be purchased is another two years worth of a Napa filter.

The math doesn't work for me.

I think he was right. Image

For what it is worth, nearly every vehicle I have ever driven has had over 100,000 miles on it, and I have never used a K&N air filter on any of them.

Y'don't say? How 'bout that! Me, since I was eleven years old I've been swinging my left hand in a figure-8 every hour on the hour under full moons that happen on Tuesdays, and it must be workin' cuz I ain't seen a single unicorn! That's proof enuf fer me, I don't need no gol-durn fancy-pants ding-blast college-boy data or nothin'.

All my vehicles also have tires and I have never struck Bigfoot at night while driving.

reminds me of a tale of, liars, damn liars and statistics,,,it went something like this

of a judge who recognized three degrees in liars: the liar simple, the d—d liar, and the expert witness. The point lies in the fact that expert witnesses are allowed to give evidence as to what is their opinion, and hence are out of the reach of an indictment for perjury, which always hangs over the head of the ordinary witness, who can testify to fact only.

expert information, statistics and tests are used to validate a theory. In most validations, it is possible for the expert information and statistics and tests to be presented to support a theory and not directed to understanding the truth.
A historical examination of the liars-damn liars-statistics quote is at the link below..

Now that there is a very interesting perspective. And I mean it.

An extrapolation of which may be found as a "fair witness" in Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land".
Not an original concept of his, but well represented in that story.

And to think that this excursion into philosophy branched from my slacker's wish to delay a simple filter replacement.

Heinlein's "fair witness" was a bit different, as I recall:

Ask someone, looking at a barn, what color (red) the barn is. The usual answer would be "red", but the "fair witness" answers "the side that I can see is red".
