Recently, I had to replace the transmission in my 65 Valiant. All I had to put in there was a unit I have had sitting around the shop for -well- ever.

I was a bit nervous about the unit, but the transmission itself has proven to be OK. The problem are its many exterior O rings, on the park, shift and speedometer cables, which are now leaking like a sieve.

I anticipated this problem and tried to replace them with new ones when I had it apart, but none of the rings in the off-the-peg selection at Auto Zone are correct for my application. I had to reuse the old ones, so no shock that I am having trouble.

Where do you find yours? I think if I can get some new, correct O rings in this thing, my troubles will be solved.

Buy this kit (linked vendor is extremely reliable) and the special gasket described in this post, delete the inline can-type filter, then see here for fluid selection guidance.

Hi Dan, thanks for the info.

Looking at that kit reminded me about the Neutral Safety Switch. I can't remember the last time I saw one available anywhere and all of mine are dead. Do you know of a source?

Same vendor can probably supply one for you. If not, www.oldmoparts.com .

Thanks again. I look forward to stemming the tide of transmission fluid on my shop floor.

Just an FYI...
The most common leak points on the early "cable" 904 trans are: 1) the throttle pressure lever seal (Kick-down lever) and 2) burned or damaged cable housing(s), (the outer cable "jacket") usually the park cable.

And if you find the shift or park cable has fallen out of its floorpan bracket and come to rest on the exhaust pipe at some point in the past, burning the cable jacket and allowing trans fluid to leak through the cable sidewall, an easy fix is here.

Thanks for the info. The good news is that none of my cables are burned through. I have had this car for 28 years and have tried to maintain it so there is little damage of that sort.

I purchased the new pan, p/n 52118 779AD, described in this thread. It did not come with a magnet.

It is two inches deeper than the original 1 in deep pan. This means the pickup will no longer be in the bottom of the fluid. Do any of you think this will be a problem?

Also what, if any, sealant should I use on the reusable rigid gasket?

A deeper trans pan should come with a filter extension "plate" and gasket(s) that allow you to drop the filter to the floor of the deeper pan.
In your case, the adapter should have 2 fluid feed holes, needed to feed the front & rear pumps, found in the early 904s. ( the 66 and later adapter is shown below for reference only)

It didn't come with any accessories of any kind, just the pan.

I just test-fitted it on the transmission and it almost fits. It is binding up on the park pawl cover so that the holes in the front of the pan do not quite align with the bolt holes in the transmission housing.

Here is what I am seeing. In the first photo, you can see the critical difference in the pan rails.

This difference the reason it is binding.

I can't get the images to display, so I guess you will have to copy and paste the URL to see the images.
