i have found a 62 lancer gt with an aluminum slant in it. i am considering looking at and possibly buying it.
' i know the aluminum versions are quite rare, due to most of the ones that were built have rotted out from lack of coolant care.
is there anything i should check out on this one before buying, or should i stay away from it?

check the anti freeze, you can not run just water in the waterjacket
one of mine has a hole in the waterjacket between block and trans
there can be a lot of stuff, talk to the owner, check the overall condition of everything, a lot of things can be patched or hidden

i'm pretty sure it should have coolant in it. it is in wisconsin, but who knows where it has lived in the past 50 years.

Coolant maintenance is critical on these engines. They are very susceptible to electrolysis. You need to know the maintenance history. If maintenance history is not well documented, I wouldn't pay much. Until you take it apart, you won't know if it's a viable engine.

What are you trying to do? Know that the aluminum engine is not generally considered a good candidate for a performance build.
Not impossible. Just much harder to work with.

no, i wouldn't be planning any performance work at this time. i have my slanted 41 plymee for that. i'm interested in the car even without the aluminum engine. it is advertised as excellent running car, and the rest appears in great condition. it is a somewhat restored car (paint and interior) also has offy manifold, edelbrock carb (assuming a 4 bbl), and dual exhaust. but the aluminum engine would be a plus if everything is good. just want to add it to my small collection at this time.
i am a hot rodder at heart, still don't know why i like that lancer?

Sounds like you are you getting into it for the right price. Such as, if the engine is slag, it doesn't really make a difference for the purchase decision.

You never know. Done properly, and taken care of properly, an aluminum engine can be a great piece. It certainly can get a lot of attention at the cruise in, car show, or track.

Sounds like a cool car, and if the engine runs well then it is at least in reasonable condition. You will have to pull the head to see about corrosionn at the tops of the cylinder liners.

Keep in mind, the 198 is not a direct bolt in. There are mods that need to be made to install that engine in the older car.

yes, i know about the crankshaft register problem, where i would need a different flexplate, and a crankshaft bushing.

Oil pan and pick-up tube from the chassis you will use the engine in...
Everything else should be fine.

sounds like i may not need to be concerned with the engine. i talked to the current owner tonight, and he said the engine was rebuilt with about 700 miles on it, and also the trans.
going on thanksgiving to look at it. if all is as represented, i think i may end up owning it
