I got under my car today.
1971 Valiant Slant/6 Auto
I thought my sender was leaking. But no, my gas tank is leaking at the seam.
I was looking at the website below and got confused. It lists two different tanks. Both 16 gallon.
But it says something about early or late 71.
It says either 4 side vents with EEC,...... or a Front vent pipe?
I don't know which one i have?
Here's the two tanks.

well, that's entirely interesting. mine is neither one!! however, mine is a 75 california car. it does have a front vent.

i found the tank to be a lot easier to pull than i expected. before you order one, you might want to pull yours. i chose to clean mine and order new parts. i was going to put it back on this weekend, but i ended up pulling my back instead.

In my '71 Satellite, there was a change in 4/71 in the tank - I think it went from 4 lines in the side to 4 lines in the front around then. That's a B, not an A-body, so maybe that isn't relevant. I've found the hardest part of dropping the tank is dealing with rusted J-bolts that broke or I had to cut off, so you might want to pickup some spares.

You'll have to crwal under and look to see how many lines come off the tank. It'll be somewhat easy to recognize...you either have 4 lines coming off the tank...or you will have a single upper vent hose coming off the middle/top of the tank about inline with the fuel line coming out of the fuel sending unit...(this configuration became somewhat standard on later cars through the 70's especially those equipped with the charcoal cannister).

Does anyone know if these tanks are good? Would a good used be better? I need to get around to this too one of these days.

The 4 vent EEC system was a California only car thing in 70-71. The 4 vent tubes would run to an angled cannister/tube about the same diameter as the fill tube located behind the left wheel well in the trunk. The tube extends under the trunk floor with 4 hose barbs poking out for the rubber hose that connects to the nearby tank barbs. From there a 5th line would go to the crankcase. From the crankcase it would travel through the PCV to get burnt. Uses the crankcase as a storage for fuel vapor instead of a charcoal cannister.

Good description; the FSM shows some details. Every used gas tank I've bought ended up leaking in short order; I'd go for a new one if at all possible.

I am only going brand new.
I didn't pull the tank yet. I did look under.
Looks like there is a hose coming from the top of the tank, above the sending unit. That's all I see.
Should I brush some rustoleum on my tank, before putting it in? To keep it rustproofed?
Or should I wait and make sure I got a good one first?

Sounds like the pre apr 71. that was an all across the board change for Ma Mopar due to emissions

Not for sure I understand the question, "got a good one first" meaning a non-leaking NEW tank? or one that "fits"?

Side by side careful comparison will fix the second part, If it were me I'd prep (paint) as you see fit or want before install, as I dont think you can ship it back if its had fuel in it anyways. (NOT 100% positive on that though)
