Much like everything else you'll need a floor hump for the 63-66 cars, and a tranny that has the mounting pad on the tail shaft for the shifter (most column shift cars came with boxes that do not have the mounting points cast into that spot), and a shifter and correct shift rods.

For the trouble...it might be easier to just to find a 70's A-230 floor shift unit so you have the benefit of the synchro 1st gear....that being said, it might be easier to find a complete A-833OD and get the same first 3 gears and an option for highway mileage (or a chance to change to funner rear gearing later without the loss of mileage).

The universal three speed shifters such as the Hurst Indy Shifter, need to be "adjusted" to work. This would mean measuring and cutting the brackets and rods. I installed one in a '66 many years ago with out to much difficulty.

I thought about switching to a floor shift on my Duster for the non synchro 3 speed. There was no provision to mount a shifter on the tranny.

I have a 833OD hanging in there now.

If you need a OD bell let me know I have several. Including one with a hydro slave cylinder.

If you ever run across a "Serco" shifter grab it. Had one in my 66 Valiant back in about 68. Good strong shifter, at least I never broke it. Looked to be built on a par with the Hurst comp-plus of the day.
Should have salvaged the shifter from the car when I took the engine out a few years later (that's a whole nother story).
As mentioned in another post. Really the best long term, would be to keep your eyes open for a late 70s Aspen or Volare with the overdrive 4 speed. That's the direction I'm going in my 66, was going to do the T-5 thing, but my job just dosen't leave me the time for complcated conversions.

has anyone tried to modify one to make it work? i have one and was thinking about cutting it up to see if i can make it work. was just wondering if anyone had any tips. looks like all i would really need to do is shorten the brackets that goes to the back of the tranny.

How much would you like for one? Any idea on shipping to Reno NV?

I too was thinking about doing this conversion..as much as i've enjoyed the column im ready to DRIVE my rebuilt slant!

..Not to mention it takes all of my lady to drive the ole girl

Looking into the A 833 now. Just not sure which bell to use. Are all the A833's OD?

No, 60's to 1974 model year A-833's are close ratio direct 4th gear boxes with a few variations in 1st gear ratios, and a few for the 440/6pak and Hemi that have the 18 spline input shaft. 1975-1987 the boxes are A-833OD.
