Shot motor mounts......it sounds like little to no rubber left and it's metal to metal.

If that's the case, am I doing damage by driving it?

If that is it, no.....and if your car uses spool type mounts. I found that my engine mounts were so bad as well as the transmission mount, which would add to it making a clunking sound as the engine twisted and rocked around at various rpms.

After replacing all three my wife felt much better.....

Sorry for all the questions... Okay, these spool mounts you speak of, are they east to come by or is someone going to have to fabricate something for me.

Spool mounts are only on the '73+ cars. Your '66 has sandwich mounts.

FYI- the good mounts for your car will be expensive. Do NOT buy the cheap Anchor brand mounts that cost around $10 each. The cheap ones wear out quickly.

Try THESE recommended to me by SlantSixDan. I haven't ordered a set yet, but I am going to.

The Poly Motor mounts are well worth the money, you will never have to replace them again!
Are you sure it's the motor mounts? The reason I mentioned the torsion bar bushings was on the 1964 (270)4-door Dart I had, the bushings were gone (dry rotted apart) and it sounded like what you described.
Only when stopped and in gear. It was a parts car, so I never fixed it.

What are torsion bar bushings? The torsion bars fit into metal sockets on either end. The closest bushing to the forward end of the torsion bar is the lower control arm bushing.

Sorry, I am probably not helping, calling things by the incorrect name."Front Strut Rod Bushings"?

Before I buy these poly mounts, I'm going to consult my Valiant manual and try and locate these bushings.

as others said I would prefferbly have somone sit in the drivers seat and hold it in drive with brakes pressed firmly and see if you can get it to knock and look over everything and see if you can pin point it if it's the motor mounts it will be an easy spot as they are easy to see and easy to tell if they are shaking and coming apart, if you have to do it yourself block all four tires front side and back, use your parking brake and see if it will knock then try to find it and be damn careful that the car is blocked well. I had a 74 Valiant that had what sounds to be a similar problem and it was the motor mounts going bad and making the exhaust knock rite by the steering near my feet and was intermitten like you say, if it's not that I would say it's a tranny thing as others have said. Keep us posted and again be carefull looking for it by yourself.

Worn strut rod bushings clunk when you apply the brakes.
