Weigh the big ends and then weigh the little ends. What you want is all big ends the same and all little ends same, you should find they come out the same weight for the rods.

so if your going to polish the flash on the beam of the rod you should do that first.

I would think that is the logical Order of things Terry.


When doing the rod balancing procedure mentioned above from fopar / youtube video do you do this with the Bearing shells installed in the big end of the rod?

If you end up within 1-3 g spread among all rods, I think you are fine. < 1 g should be doable, but I'm not sure that's necessary for your type of build.

Block and crank are at the Machine shop. Top of the block will just get kissed to clean it up. Cam bearings should be here Wednesday. I installed the ARP rod bolts and now I need to finish balancing them.

Spoke to Mike Jeffrey on the phone and got some porting pointers for my head. Also ordered 2 windage trays and 2 scrapers. One for my engine and one for Ryan.

Began porting on the head. I work on this in 1-2 hours spurts. The head will not need much planed off it either if my calculations are correct. I should be at 10.3 -10.6 CR depending on where the head winds up when I CC it. It is at 58CC right now.

A/F gauge is here as well. It will get installed when the new Motor goes back in.

Game plan is to have Block and crank back in my garage in 3 weeks. Then the whole month of February will be for assembly, removal of the existing engine and install into Ryan's truck, and then install my new one in the car. March will be for some tuning and waiting for the 1st day of T&T at mason Dixon.

Today I spent several hours building the fixture to balance the rods like in the video. It took some time to get it to the place where I could get it to repeat the measurements. You really need to have the spacer that the big end of the rod hangs on right or it won't repeat. If someone could turn some of those out on a lathe it would really help. I cut mine out with a jigsaw, then mounted it in my drill press and kept hitting it with a grinder to trim it down and smooth it out. I got it Ok but a "true" round and flat surface for the rod to hang on would be better.

Once I got it to repeat readings to my satisfaction I got all the small ends within 1G and then the over all weight to 1G. That was actually the accuracy of my scale. So off to the machine shop they go!

That was a lot of grinding and a little time consuming, but I really like learning to do things my-self. Thanks for the video.
