I have some questions about running a megasquirt stand alone unit for ignition only for the time being then possibly in the future converting to FI
what all is needed and which unit and software do I need.? I don't have any experience with one of these and im really green so all the help is appreciated

I'm looking for a laundry list of parts and pieces
Thanks Aaron

Maybe I should of put this in the electrical section but I thought I would get more of a response in this section

The reason I'm thinking of going to a MS is for the data logging features and the ignition benefits
I have some msd stuff like a 6al, btm, and two step but that's Alot of stuff and in my minds eye that complicates things and if I can get away with being able to use one unit for all my needs that's a winner

This is on a turbo drag car that will see some street time I'm just not sure what all is needed like
Crank trigger?
Map sensors?
Wideband? (which I have installed)

Thanks Aaron

The map sensor is built within the megasquirt unit itself, you run a manifold hose to the box itself. It may need to be upgraded from the default one depending on how much boost you want, iirc its 1 bar max but comes with a 2 or 3 bar option.

Many options for ignition - you can let the distributor trigger the MS (would have to remove all advance mechanisms from dist) then have MS drive coil directly. This is most susceptible to noise though. You can use an HEI module in the middle to act as a filter. You can mount a sensor/wheel and do EDIS - you use a ford edis module to interface sensor / coils to MS. This is the most fool-proof electrically but requires hassle of mounting the trigger wheel and sensor. A compromise might be using the 7/8 pin hei module - you connect coil and locked out dist to the module. Then it sends a nice clean filtered signal to MS so MS can read rpm, and MS sends a feedback signal to module to change advance.

The MS will accept a narrowband (1v max) or wideband (5v max) signal to log.

If you want to be cheap you can do a "megajolt" - autosportlabs.com - this is essentially a megasquirt but ignition only hardware.

If you really do envision EFI in future and don't mind ponying up $$ for hardware now then you want either an MS2 or 3 depending on the feature set you want. For ignition only you won't need anything else besides the megasquirt unit + whatever ignition setup you choose. If you do go EFI then you add the coolant and manifold temp sensors, 02, TPS. You can add the sensors now just for logging, but MS will only use the built in map and RPM signal for ignition.

The pc software is tunerstudio - it is free for the basic version which is fully functional. If you choose to pay for the registered version you get added snazzy things like the autotune feature. You may see reference to MegaTune - this is outdated and not developed anymore.

Poke around megasquirt.info and diyautotune.com. Matt, a member of this forum as well works there and is a great help. msefi.com is the megasquirt forum. Sorry for the information overload but there really is a lot to consider besides a simple shopping list.

I haven't updated it for MS3 yet, but for ignition only control, this article I put together explains how to use a Mopar distributor with any MS1 or MS2 variant for spark control:

I would suggest going with MS3 to stay on top of the latest hardware and software, esp considering you want to go to EFI later.

Matt, I have been meaning to call you about a package with coil pack, MS3X, cables/relay box, crank trigger, etc, for my new Valiant's port EFI setup (turbo later) Maybe next week we can have a phone chat and I can order some stuff.

Best,

Lou

Electromotive tec 3r. I have had no problems with the tec 3r but it would seem that a mega squirt can perform all of the same functions. On a side note I bought the tec 3 r in 2006. That is the start of the turbo project, you can see that I move at lightning speed.
Will.

Yeah, I started my turbo project in 2006 and it ran in 2011. Hopefully the next one will take less time...

I received the car in October of 2010 and its finally road ready with some minor bugs to work out. The only thing holding me back now is the cooler weather here in Michigan.
There is couple minor changes in store for this winter I have to get the Toad comparable to Wills menthol breathing beast.

OK, now that I have completed my 225 blow through turbo build. my next upgrade is EFI. I already have the injectors. Well see how 6 2.0 SOHC injectors work. I know that is "only" 3l worth of Mopar injector but thats about 180HP worth of fuel, slightly more than a 225 six. and I can put 2 more into the intake upstream, kicked on by a hobbs switch under boost for 240HP total. Or I can just bite the finanacial bullet and buy 6 bigger injectors. Anyway...my question is: what is the best throttle body to get that integrates with the MS 1.2 that I have yet to assemble? Should I go with a generic GM unit, or maybe an uber cheap 3.0 Ford Windstar TB or maybe keep it "all in the family" with a 3.8 Mopar minivan TB? Ideally, I need one that has the IAC, TPS, IMS and maybe even the fuel pressure regulator in the TB, not seperate just to keep it simple. I also want to purchase the daughterboard for my MS to make it 2.0. Can I get a 2 BAR to work with the 1.2? Thanks.

If you mean you've got an MS1 V2.2, I would use a Ford throttle body and IAC valve; the stepper type used on GM and Chrysler throttle bodies doesn't work with MS1.

Cool , picked up a 3.8 Windstar TB with IAC (or whatever Ford calls them) attached for 22 bucks shipped, cant beat that! Now if I can just find that MS 1 V2.2 kit that needs to be built...It around here somewhere.
