Hi all, hope everyone had a nice Christmas and New Years. It is still colder than the dickens here in Seattle area but my thoughts and dreams are starting to ramp up on getting my 63 Dart convertible already. I put her away when the rains came and she sits lonely in my garage awaiting my attention again.
I started her up last week and she smoked quite a bit, I know a rebuild is in store and have been laying in bed thinking what I want to do first.
I know a head overhaul is in store and was wondering if anyone has used Since the head is a 63 I figured it might be better to buy a rebuilt that to get this one rebuilt so saw one on ebay and wondered if anyone had used Odessa Cylinderhead for a rebuilt head?

I would think a local shop could do your head for less than shipping cost added to the purchase price.

Ditto. Down here in Tacoma it runs between $300-$500 for a full head rebuild with some mild custom work done. Call around to machine shops in your area and see what they quote you to fully rebuild your head. My personal machine shop of choice is Bud's Machine and Engine in Lakewood. www.budsmachine.com

NAPA in Renton has done some good work.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Is it work getting the early head rebuilt or would a later model without plug tubes be better? I would like to make it ready for unleaded fuel and put in larger valves.

get the engblder valves on ebay while the head is of it will be worth it . 1.70ìn 1.44ex

If your picking up an extra head and getting it ready, I like the peanut plug style heads, which were released about 1976 and later...They don't leak oil, and it's easy to find spark plugs for them and they have a nice chamber. I like a clean engine bay and nice clean engines.

If you are interested, I have some spare loose heads in my garage I would sell cheap.

Only 85$ cheaper.

I have also been looking for a rebuilt head. Going to a machine shop here in sweden is not an option. Just to get the head shaved and get new valveseats installed is a 1000$ job over here. Then if you want new valveguides its another 3-400 on top.

One thing you should know about the heads in both those E-bag links, they are hydraulic heads. Not really much difference and will work well with older motors, but you will need an '81 and up valve cover.

Less competition in the market (fewer machine shops) and high taxes. You have to pay 25% vat (value added tax) on everything, parts and work.

It is cheaper for me to buy a reman head from the states and have it shipped here through a freight forwarder than to let a machine shop here do the work on my old head. Even though I have to pay import duties and the vat on the head I import it is still cheaper.

An example:
The head i linked on ebay
270$+ core charge 100$ (I will not be returning a core)+ shipping to my freight forwarder 30$+ freight forwarders fees and shipping to sweden 75$= 475$ on this amount I have to pay import duties 4,5%=496,4$ and then vat 25% on the total amount= 620,5$
