There are 2 TDC points, TDC (Compression stroke) where both valves are closed & TDC (Exhaust stroke) where both valves are slightly open. (this is also called the "overlap event")

For a first timer, you want to focus on the overlap event (TDCE) and also the intake valve's closing point.
For overlap, see if intake open is about the same as exhaust close, around TDCE. ( you measured 34 degrees?)

How & where are you taking your measurements? With a dial indicator off the lifter? Off the rocker arm or valve retainer?
Is this a factory cam?

I'm using a dial indicator off of the lifter because the head is still off. I'm using a 3/8" ratchet extension between the lifter and the dial indicator pointer, which works surprisingly well. I just measured the intake because I thought that was the only one I needed. I'll measure the exhaust lobe and post those numbers tomorrow.
