Was unsure where to post this, but I got a new fuel sending unit, but I think it is not reading correctly. Like it says I am empty but I still have like 8-10 gallons in the tank. So I dunno if I got the wrong one, or if its something else.

I have the part number somewhere around here but haven't found it.

Try grounding the sender wire and then turn key to on position, gauge should read full. If gauge doesn't read full bad gauge or break in wire.

If it's an aftermarket unit like the Spectre brand you need to bend the 'arm' to adjust the sweep properly other wise it could not read true empty/full for 8 gallons or something in between.

Yeah its an aftermarket one. How can I tell when I have bent it enough?

New info, I did bend the arm on the sweep, but it still reads the same. I am wondering how the gauge should read with about 8 to 10 gals left in the tank.

Havent tryed the grounding yet, do I just need to stick something metal in the wire or what?

Just make a jumper wire, pull off conductor leading to from gage to tank at sending unit. Attach one end of jumper on a good ground; stick the other end of jumper into the female end of gas gage wire coming from dash, turn ignition key to "ON". If good, gage will swing to full in a second or two; then disconnect jumper, and return key to "OFF"once test is made.

I have a really long jumper wire... so I can plug it into the connector, back at the tank and the other end onto the sender unit... while I sitting in the driver's seat.
Turn on the ignition and move the sender thru it's travel... while watching the response on the gauge.

Alright, I was finally able to hook a jumper up and check the gauge and it goes right past full with no issue.

Now I am wondering Doc since you have done this outside the tank, how should the gauge read in reference to the position of the sweep? cause I can look inside my tank and see the sweep and where its positioned, So I am wondering if the sweep position is suppose to kinda correspond with the position of the needle on the gauge. Because I really do not know how that works.

New test done, no results. So I made a really long jumper to plug in and clip to the unit and try moving the arm to see what the gauge reads and it did nothing. But as soon as I ground out the wire the gauge goes to full, or when i put the unit back in the tank and hook it back up it reads on the gauge.

Any ideas?

Dont' forget to complete the circuit, so if oyu are using a jumper to the instrument cluster you have to have a wire that goes from the sender to the ground as well (that's why it works in the tank or if jumper goes to ground.
