What a PITA this thing was to remove! I've got the sore, bruised hand to prove it.

I'm now in the market for a new oil pump. Chipped the pump body trying to pry it out, then the pump bearing 'neck' that 'plugs' into the block sheared off from my pounding on the filter flange with a 2x4 to try to loosen it. Note the photos, where you can see the bearing portion of the oil pump still lodged in the block, then the broken pump neck.

I was finally able to remove the camshaft once I got this out. What should I do about the pump piece left in the block? Should I try drilling it out through the pump shaft hole with a large reaming type drill bit, or should I let the machinist remove when I take the block to have the cylinders bored out?

Also, are there any pieces from this pump that I should save for future use as spare parts?

Try taking it out when the engine is in the car!(it's not worth it!)
it's about as much fun as working on Pushbutton transmission cables!

I like 'em too, but one look at the oil pump location told me I was never going to try and remove this thing with the engine in the car.

The FSM details quite an elaborate procedure about how to do it. After reading it, I thought 'yeah, right'. With this, there would have been no way.

Pulled the oil pump, engine in this weekend during my cam swap.

Yep, did the cam swap, engine in. Built the tool.

I did it to see if it was easier. six of one, half dozen of the other. Certainly harder on the back.

Can't imagine pulling that glued in pump, engine in. That needs to be hot tanked. Penzoil?

Glued in pump?? First I'd heard of that, but I'm still pretty new. Fortunately my project /6 is in the back of my pickup, and it was free!

I snapped a shaft off in my first aluminum engine. There is a good chance for corosion in that tight fit.

ROD!
All the way from Australia! No not done yet, been under the weather. I did get my wagon back from paint though. I will send you a picture when I get that part done. ATB

well, for what it's worth, it wasn't hard to change the pump in a 70 dart back in 1980. unfortunately, i also had worn main bearings, so it was a waste of time.
