Well spent most of a day trying to remove the old steering box. Had to take the exhaust pipe out, lower the steering column, and then things got difficult. Tried soaking it, biggest gear puller I could I could fit in the space and tapped it sternly with a small sledge. Pitman would not separate from the geary. Any suggestions? Thanks, Mark

It should pop right off with a pitman arm puller… They look like a beefed up larger tie rod end puller with two cast arms and a threaded bolt.

Bought a K-D brand from a local Tool Shop, and have used it multiple times, think I paid $35 for it...even rented it out a couple times to local members upgrading their suspension, well worth the $$$.

I would heat the pitman arm where it splines to the steering box shaft with a propane torch for >5 min, then use a pitman arm puller. I have stripped those pullers before when not using heat. Do not heat so much that you get the box shaft hot and kill the seal. You do not need to get it red hot or anything like that, just moderate heating.

I have Broken Many of those Pitman Arm Pullers... Never Stripped one..

Fortunately It was one with the "lifetime Warranty" And I Was able to Take them Back and get em replaced.... Save your receipts.

I would imagine if you get a good one from maybe Napa or Cal-van or KD or Snap on etc.. They might not break.

I put the puller on, tightened it to the point I thought it might break, just a feeling, and nothing. I left it on that way and hope to hear a pop in the middle of the night. If not I will heat it up as Lou says and see what happens. I am pretty much in the middle of nowhere so getting another tool if I break this one is a pain for sure. I am putting in a new gear and returning the core. So if I mess the old one up removing it no big deal. I'll put as much heat as is necessary. Thanks again, Mark

Hit the arm with a small sledge hammer while the puller is putting tension on it. On the round part of the arm directly besides the jaws of the puller.

I recall having to use a cheater bar on the wrench I was using on the puller when removing mine. I think once I used an impact gun as well. If you haven't broke the tool by now I'm guessing your only a 1/4 turn away from finishing the job. Just make sure the puller is square and not slipping off.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that hammer trick too. Thanks, Pierre. You can hit the end of the puller bolt, and the pitman arm (where it wraps around the box shaft splines, as Pierre says). Even some heat really helps.

Success! The heat did the trick and I didn't break a thing, my muscles might not agree. Thanks for the help.
