I recently took my temporary 225 and reinstalled the original 170. Unfortunately while I had the 225 in I had replaced the exhaust system which is now bumping the steering box because of the subtle difference in height of the two engines. Since I have to have the exhaust redone anyway, after much reading I think I could gain some performance by some modification to it. It is a daily driver so I am not lookiing for a lot of noise but I am looking for whatever improvements that can provided with a better system. Using a stock exhaust manifold what would be the optimum changes I could make, size of pipe, type of muffler etc. It presently has "fake" dual exhaust with what I think is 1 3/4 inch piping everywhere. Any comments are welcome..thanks, Mark

I sure like my set up......and very quiet, 2.5" most of the way. It is great on long commutes......just wind noise, that is it!

Car is equipped with Clifford shorty headers drained by two inch duel pipes to back bumper, and 9.5:1 compression. I have had ear plug loud with plenty of drone with just burned out sonic turbo mufflers, not quite ear plug loud with some drone, and still can’t hear radio while under way with OEM stile aftermarket mufflers.

As of last fall I installed two 12â€￾ [url=http://slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=366970&highlight=muffler#366970]Flow Master HP mufflers[/url] ahead of the OEM cans. The shorter, less expensive, 12â€￾ HP muffler clips most of the nasty high tones inherent to straight six engines making for a mellow straight six sound not too different from what an old English performance six would make. I can mostly hear the radio over wind noise with top down, mechanical engine sounds, and slight rear end noise previously drowned out by exhaust note while under way. I even discovered at a particular speed over 55 mph there is a wind generated whistle when top is down.

All I can add here is try to resist any temptation to ditch the tailpipe(s). Your mileage may vary, but it has been my experience that even with a 'race' type muffler, a properly sized and bent tailpipe can dramatically reduce both the noise level and most of the other annoyances without taking a major hit on performance. Never again shall I dump the exhaust down before the axle or out the side in front of the rear tire(s).

I have the old exhaust removed and as I look at the space closely it appears that 2.5 inch pipe out of the factory manifold is going to be very very tight. It almost bumped the steering box with the 1.75 size pipe now. I would assume that the engine does move a bit on acceleration and I dont want it to bump if you know what i mean. Am I wrong or will it fit with a little effort.

First off, you can't run 2 1/2" pipe off the stock manifold. That biggest flange that fits is 2 1/4". So you need a stub of 2 1/4" pipe that is expanded out to 2 1/2".

Believe it or not, there is enough room to run a 2 1/2" pipe down past the pitman arm and the shift linkage bar.

On our Duster, there is about 6" of 2 1/4" pipe bent at roughly a 60* angle. This is expanded out to 2 1/2" which runs out to the rear bumper. The muffler guy said this was the first setup like this that he has ever done on one these cars and he has been in business a long time. This system was worth 3 tenths at our local track.

Our '65 Dart is running Dutra duals. I have snaked a pair of 2 1/8" pipes past the pitman arm and the Z bar. It is tight, but it works. These pipes connect to a 3" Flowmaster Y connector. The connecter exits at the transmission cross member. From there, the exhaust runs thru a 2 1/2" pipe that has the muffler dumping right before the rear axle.

The Duster has a Maramont muffler, the Dart has a cheapy turbo muffler. They sound different, the Duster is quieter, the Dart is loud and nasty, but the exhaust for both is drowned out after 60 mph due to road/wind noise.

Thanks for the info. There is a custom exhaust shop near me so I can at least tell them what i want now. I will run 2 1/4 till im clear of everything and then expand up to 2.5 to and through the muffler which I am still deciding on.

When you do it, get a thick exhaust flange for 2.25" pipe. That way you have a a good start. You can easily swage the 2.25" pipe up or slip 2.5" over it.....if you decide to go that big.
