I'm doing a super six set-up with Dutra duals & need to go with a mini starter
for exhaust clearance. Anyone know where I can get one in Canada? I'm going to visit a buddy near Boston soon so I could ship it there and pick up.

Also, do you recommend a heat shield as it's looks like it will still be "tight"

I just went to the local junk yard and asked for a starter for a 95 318 i told the man at the counter what i was doing and he told me he didnt think it would bolt up and work but, it did. I re worked the solinoid terminal a little so the stock wiring didnt have to be changed.

Just as Carl said you can visit a junkyard and ask for one out of a 1992-1995 Dodge Dakota/Ram/Ramcharger with the 5.2L Magnum engine.
If spending lots of $$$ you can get a reman over the counter at an autoparts store (junkyards runs about $25-50 depending on location, remans are in the $100+ range).

Dutra Duals are not a problem with the starter in the stock location, "Dual Duals" are tight and you need to get creative with the bends.

I wanted to replace my starter this winter and went to our local auto parts, Black Diamond Auto Parts, and they gave me a choice of the mini starter or the original style, for $45 with a lifetime warranty. It is listed to work on everything from 1992 up to the new 2013 Chrysler 300. So I went with the mini, bolted right up, wiring was long enough and it works great!
It sure whips my old tired $100 barn find engine over. Starts right up! Zing -boom! No crank, crank, crank, boom.

there are some ODD cases but basically a dodge starter is a dodge starter. Mine is from a 99 durango. Didnt even look for the engine size as it was already gone. When who ever pulled the engine at the junkyard, they threw the starter in the seat. I had to use a butt connector to attach the smaller of the feed wires but love it. Sounds like a 99 dodge starting up. Just make sure to get one that has the square alignment on the nose. East coast has plenty of u-pull-it places, got mine for under a $20. For that cost just get two.

My 225 has a mini starer too, would not have it any other way now. Quick start up and spins easy, no grinding......

Gotta watch this as the "variants" may not work so well with older vehicles.

The classic reduction gear starters came in 2 common flavors and the big block starter used to be the choice for getting things started (especially a high compression slant).

Typical recommendation is to cross reference the 1992-1993 model years since they are closer to the 'turning' point from our generation of engines to the next generation and this style is typical up to about the mid-late 90's... There is a point in the late 90's where one of the bolt on terminals became a 'tab' (about 1998-ish) and a modification needs to happen to make it work. About 2002 mopar got rid of the 'nose cone' on the starter, which can be bolted to our vehicles, but will not allow the starter to center correctly (the use of the nose cone in the round detent of the bellhousing)...Another thing to consider before saying this is that there are "other" Dodge engines that use a variant of this starter that won't work with our particular flywheel/convertor ring tooth count.

So it's always best when asking to keep it to the LA-Engine variety (3.9,5.2,5.9) and the early-mid 90's to keep a bored junkyard clerk who doesn't care about our cars from from getting one for say a cummings diesel off the shelf and telling a board member it should work fine for that inline 6...

Depending on area according to Car-part.com the later starters are priced heavier than the early 90's versions-for what ever reason (this also gives the first timer a chance to say "it's for my old truck" at the counter and get it on the cheap)


There should also be a note for the 1st gen A-body guys who have the direct drive starter that can't bolt this dude in place without some other changes to support it...

This thread along with a lot of others was added to the FAQ (mini starter) to include the thread on 1st gens not accepting the mini. Lots of threads to cover the mini and /6Dan has a lot of info and great input. Mini also saves some weight making easier to work on, not like trying to hold a concrete block in there.

Thanks for all the replies & great info as usual. I found a starter today off a 98 Dakota. Can finish off exhaust now and see how this Super Six works.

Ditto what everyone else has said about this subject. I have been running 3 JY mini's for over 10 years each with no problems at $15 each. It's a good ivestment all around to have one.
