Found this article on this forum, was buried in a listing of several other topics,,
describes how to add the stop bolts found on Competition Plus shifters to the Hurst shifters found in D series trucks with the A-833 tranny.
also is a good primer for rebuilding and adjusting the shift rods.

,, you will only get about 4 threads on the front housing wall and 3 on the rear wall,, so be careful to get the pilot hole straight. If I was going to give the stop bolts a lot of hard use I would probably tack weld on half thickness lock nuts..

You know in the last 25+ year I have never needed stop bolts on the shifter no matter what mopar I drove or how hard I racked the gears, even now with a stock truck shifter in my Hpak duster, rebuilding one, adding proper lube, and making sure you installed the washers in the proper spots, everything is spot on. I figure Hurst added the stop bolts because F**/M*** used the sloppy dagenham 4 speeds in the 60's, or because no one takes the time to properly line up the generic shift rods in the kits.

Another item I see they forgot was that mopar versions have a threaded nut welded to the main body for a grease zerk to be installed so you can put the tranny in neutral and keep all the plates lubed. (Your pics have it in the proper spot, kudos!)

The service manual has the detail on setting up and adjusting the stock rods and how to insert a tool or nail to line everything up in neutral.

One other thing that is never covered is getting a set of smaller fender type washers to help support the face of the shift rod at the shift toggles. If installed normally even with the wonky factory spring clips they have a fair amount of movement, if you shim these up and use a wider surface to spread the load out the rods won't flop or sag in the shift toggle and shifts will be a lot more precise.

Installation looks good, keep it up!

I saw that side to side movement and corrected in the exact same way :)
this is the OE 83 shifter and came with the zerk fitting,,I did not know it was there until I disassembled the truck, doubt if Dad did either, so it was living on the factory lube for the past 30 years :shock:

the stop bolts should help prevent wear on the trailing end of the rod tabs,,

as part of the re-new project on the 83 D-150 had Brewers go through the tranny and shifter,, and now with the rods properly adjusted and the stop bolts,,and with the shifter lubed,, and this is with the truck setting in the garage, motor off, every thing cold,,, the dag-gone thing has never shifted a cleanly as it does now,,
