I need an exploded diagram of the motor, or brush replacement instructions.

I had the motor off the body of one of mine to clean it prior to changing contacts and replacing the relay wire post (old one seized to nut and insulator crumbled when I removed the nut.)

I was careful to keep the armature in the motor as I have no idea how to put it back if it comes out.

I put the motor back in the body for a second to see if I had cleaned enough where I can't reach with it assembled (so I could assemble, and clean the rest later)

I got distracted, and when I pulled them back apart, the pinion gear was stuck in the body and the armature pulled out.

One of the screws that seem to attach the end cap to the brush assembly has a stripped head.

I didn't bother drilling it out since I can't tell if removing that screw even helps me.

The 2 halves of the motor body seem to be just pressed together with a gasket/o-ring in between, and held put by the long screws that attach it to the body.

I ran a razor around the perimeter of where the halves come together and whacked repeatedly w/a soft face hammer to no avail.

It seems that the halves should come apart, the screws should be removed holding the brush assembly to the end half and the brushes should be depressed until the armature is reinstalled.

I can't seem to see how to go about it.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Try this diagram http://www.colemanequip.com/Case-580C-L ... ENSO-0qhz/

Once you have the 2 long thru bolts out, the other 2 screws hold/ground the brush holder & have to come out before you pull the end cap. The end cap has a stepped lip the is a slight press fit-time & rust make it tough to remove. I sometimes hold the motor housing in a "soft-jawed" vise & tap the end cap parting line with a stiff putty knife or small chisel & hammer. If your starter has permanent magnets then be careful & gentle!

Going together I find a round plastic cap just larger in diameter than the motor commutator & use it to hold the brushes in place. As the armature slides into position it pushes the cap out of the way & pop- the brushes are seated. Then fit the cap & its screws - & finish assembly.
