Started off with having to dump gas down carb to get it
going when cold. After driving around she starts up
no problem.Rebuilt holley 1920 from summit and same
thing.Replaced fuel pump and filter,same results.Added
some sea foam to tank and managed to louse up rebuilt
carb .Put old carb back on and blew air thru lines and took
out tank unit to check its filter. The only thing I found was
that the tank unit is not for this car cause they braised another
float arm to it.I will fix that and new carb later. If I messed up
the new fuel pump wouldn't it remain messed up.I still take it
to work but it is also sucking up the gas like a 383.The car
is a 63 Dodge 440.Stuck on stupid and 2years of steppin
in Dodge poop.I complain but I know im almost there with
wiring ,engine, trans etc. Comments please .John

Well I am currently playing with my choke thermostat. Have you checked your choke thermostat? If it was not working or working poorly it would not engage and you would have hard starts and loose quite a bit of fuel economy.

On the 1920 the choke is readily available and fairly cheap. If you want to upgrade to an electric which has been recommend to me and seems to be working well (Thanks Reed). Carbsonly.com has a kit. You are going to want the 1231 kit for 2 barrel you are going to want the 1232 kit.

Post multiple posts much?

Have you verified that your choke is functioing and and adjusted properly? I would start with that. Rebuilt carbs purchased through parts supplies have a deservedly poor reputation. You may need to open up the carb and go through it with a fine toothed comb to verify that (a) all the necessary parts are present and (b) everything is adjusted properly.

Go back to the post and if nobody has responded to it yet there will be a little box with an "X" in the upper right corner. Click it. You will then be asked if you want to delete the message. Say "yes". This only works if there have been no replies.

check float level
Start the car
Put your hand over the carb to restrict airflow.
Does it run better?

Does it run worse?

If they don't get responded to they get dropped down the list on the board and forgotten. Doing a search only shows this thread and another popping up so the rest are toast.

Just out of curiousity....have you pulled the hose off the carb an dstuck the end in a can and cranked the engine to see if it gets some nice spurts out of it? Just want to make sure the whole fuel system tank to carb is really doing it's job...I think after that it's the carb...and I'd check the distributor vacuum advance with a pump to see if it's toast as well (lack of that will kill mileage pretty fast).
