Hello everyone. I hate to admit it, but I have been running my slant for years every summer and never, ever have any issues with it, until now. I have a 73 scamp, yesterday I tried to start it (it had not been run in 3 weeks) and it fired but shut right off. I tried this several times. I put a little gas in the carb and it fired and died. I was about to pull the fuel line to make sure gas was coming out, but I tried to turn the engine over and then nothing. The battery is hooked up, all accessories work but when I put the key forward nothing happens. I believe the issues are unrelated, but I honestly don't know what to replace or check to make the engine turn over. Once I get it turning over I can check for gas, what items fail in the line from key to starter?

First check the battery make sure you have at least 12.3 voltswith the key off. I if you then you can set the key to start but not turn to actually start. Try jumping across tthe starter. I if the starter turns then go back and try the key. If nothing then it is likely the ignition switch. These cars have a lot of amperage going through both the I strumming clusterand ignition switch.

This is why a mini starter is a good upgrade, 7 times on a standard mopar starter is pretty much the end of the battery, time to put it on the charger for a day and see if it comes back up.

Make sue the terminals are clean and scrub them with a wire brush to get the corrosion off. Make sure the starter terminals are tight.

I did a lot of reading last night and i think my original no start issue is the ballast resistor, many people had the exact same problem of the car starting for a second and dying, and suddenly so i am going to replace that. I have full power from the battery, and the terminals are new. The starter is new as well, what is the procedure to jump across the starter, i have never done that.

There are 2 terminals on the starter I use a long screwdriver and touch both of them.

Before you start replacing things track down the problem. You can check the ballast resistor. Use a multimeter and check power on the top side of the ballast and bottom side. If you have power on top and none on bottom then it is the ballast resistor. If you have power on bottom them move to the positive of the ignition coil. There should be power there and it should be around 9 volts. Check the negative of the coil. If you have power on both sides then you need to check the spark out of the coil.

Point is there is no reason to throw parts at a problem till you find what the root of the problem is.

Thanks for the help, i jumped the starter and it cranked, and now the car cranks from the key! Still no start, however. I will go further with it next week as i am going away but i will update when it is resolved.

I replaced the ballast resistor because it was only $5 and the car started right up. I jumped the solenoid on the firewall like the starter and it started that way as well (once the car sits it does not start with the key, once i jump across, it starts with the key). I installed a new solenoid last year but it was a cheapo parts store item, i am going to replace it.
