Hi from Albuquerque NM!

I'm glad to be a member of this awesome forum. I bought a 1980 D150 about 4 months ago and have been doing a lot of work on it. I got everything working pretty well. 225 Slant Six/727 Loadflite/8.25" Corporate w/Suregrip. Bulletproof drivetrain!

I've already gleaned a ton of info here before I joined, and I hope this isn't a dumb question to get me started: when I set the timing, I disconnected the distributor vacuum advance and set it to 12 degrees advanced according the factory manual. I don't have a tach yet, but the idle seemed about right. With the motor at operating temp, when I reconnect the vacuum the timing advances another 10 degrees or so and the idle jumps up a bit to where I would say she is idling just a little fast. Is this normal? If not, what might be going on?

Sean

Welcome! :D

Yes, normal. Back the idle off to specification and your good to go.
When you lower the idle, the ported vacuum will drop off some, so the timing should back off a bit.

Thanks CJ, sounds good. I'm real glad that's normal. Now I can move on to some other quirks. Might as well mention them now

The fast idle solenoid does nothing when the AC is on. I get no volts or next to no volts across the connector. I know how to sit down with the manual and figure this out, but I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem and knew anything.

I rebuilt the Holley 1945. I still get a slight stumble off idle tho. I was wondering if its an adjustment or they all do it. Seems to be worse when cold. This truck becomes emissions exempt in a year+ and I'm going to do big changes then. But until then, I need to make the most of what I got.

 seriously I have no problem contributing to the forum, considering what I've spent on this truck and the great level of expertise here.

I knew the Illinoisan was kiddin'

Still I made a small donation to the forum. I've already solved a few problems using this site and gained knowledge on the workings of my truck. And I believe in supporting something I like. When one doesn't, I've found that 'something' tends go away. Plus it costs time and money to run a site.

Anyway valves this weekend. I'm going to try static adjustment. Just scored the 3/4-16 2.25" crank bolt (thanks to this forum) so I can turn the motor. The crank is held on with 4 smaller bolts but the big hole is threaded so it should work. :)

If you have a mechanical fan on the crank snout, the normal way is to use that for leverage to turn the crank, you won't break it. :D
(on the other hand, slippery fan belts suck...)

Olaf also if you have a high compression motor the fan method does not work. I have tried and tried and tried again.

I figured you did, but didn't want to pass up a chance to poke 'Zilla a bit.

I think I speak for all of us with a hearty THANK YOU! You are quite correct that it does take time & bucks to run a website, and Chuck and Doug have done a great job of it for quite some time. Being as this is (as far as I know), the ONLY site dedicated to our beloved "Leaning Tower of Power" engines, there's quite a few of us that donate to the cause.

Good luck.......well, Good Skill, and you might want to make that static adjustment just a couple thousands loose, if you're doing it cold. That will allow for thermal expansion of all the involved components.
