If you're talking about the Chrysler sourced Nippon alt, then I would look up anything after 1989 or so. That's when ma Mopar bailed on rolling their own and the Nippondenso was phased in on most/all/some models. I'm not aware of the v-belt, maybe the earliest had them but all that I've seen were of the serpentine style. I believe the old style mopar alt pulley fits the Nippon though, but I'd check with my local mom n pop rebuilder shop on that.

EDIT: I just looked up the reference I use for this stuff to check out the pulley deal and it's a little vague. linky here>
http://www.allpar.com/history/mopar/electrical.html
Scroll just past mid page and it says the nipppon pulley bolts on and it's interchangeable, but with what I don't know. Perhaps the suggestion is the different serp pulleys (Nippon to Nippon) can be swapped to precisely match your (non v-belt) application. I hope someone else here knows....

My 82 LeBaron has a V belt Nippon Alternator. It also has the Mitsubishi 2.6 L engine.

Thanks good to know! Any idea what the amp rating is and if the case is the same or similar to the later units hung on mopar engines?

But your limit is about 1991-1992 when mopar started using serpentine belts on the LA engines, unless you like swapping pulleys.

The best alternator (in my opinion), for the slant six is the Nipendenso, from either a 88 or 89 dodge pickup. Can't remember exactly which year. One year too early is the Chrysler alt, one year too new has a serp pulley. The Chrys alt pulley will not work to convert, different shaft size. 90 amp output, and uses the regular mopar regulator, fits the stock early cast mount with a minor mod to the mount.

Thanks for the year and pulley info guys.

I put the late Chrysler alt on my slant, it came from my '88 Dakota so that's a benchmark of sorts I suppose. So for the Nippon on a v-belted mopar engine I'd pin it to 'the '89 - '92 range and the hunt begins.
I think the late Chrysler is just as good as the Nippon unit and for no other reason I chose it over the Nippon that sat right next to it because it was made by Chrysler - oh, and it had the v pulley already - DOH!. :D
FYI - They both can run the standard external (flat) mopar regulator, mine is working fine with an ancient parts store replacement.
