Sam,

I wouldn't worry about using any additives like Rislone or Marvel Mystery oil to speed things up at this point. Just be patient, over time the Mobil 1 will do the job only slower and gentler.

Let Lou check it out.

I am running an old $100 barn find motor that sat 10 years that I freed up with Mobile 1 and it is still running in my daily driver after 3 years. All noises have disappeared and I have taken it on many long trips. It leaks a little oil out the front seal and rear main, but at such a slow rate it isn't worth worrying about. The engine has over 272,000 on it, the Mobil 1 runs clean, it still runs very strong and gets great mileage.

Keep the faith! :D These motors are tough....

I don't see the lifter sticking thing. These are solid lifters, so if anything stuck, something would have to bend or break.

Drive it on down! Looking forward to the visit.
Yeh ,Im not 100% sold on that theory myself to be honest.
I do know that one of my lifters and cam lobe was very worn, and made a clunk noise. Now I think back , that adjuster was down to the limit so the lifter may have been kind of bouncing around in the bore.
So maybe a lifter but not sticking?
Or somthin else?
Anyway Im sure Lou( Dr Watson) can ,help diagnose ,good luck and please let us know what the good doctor comes up with.

Thanks again to all for your thoughts and support here. I do appreciate it. I'm off around 5:30 AM tomorrow to try and beat the weekenders out of town. Timing and direction should be in my favor.

So the bottom line is the car got there and back with no problems. Tuning improved drvability and gas mileage. AFter listening to the slant in Lou's new Valiant, I realized I could hear the same sound in his engine. It is still a mystery what is causing it, but I am not going to worry about it any longer. I will let you know if there are further developments.

Sam

Sam that is the "Slantasorus" trying to get out! Run it for about another 150000 miles and it might get out!

I had that type of sound. You said you adjusted valves to 13 and 18. I found 18 to tight on exhaust . I found adjusting them to 22 got rid of sound . I would suggest pulling rocker shaft and make sure pushrods are straight. If aftermarket cam 13 is probably much to tight for intake. If it is stock cam i adjust to 10 and 22. Make sure it is idling as slow as possible when adjusting. Tight exhaust valve gets worse when engine is hot .

Thanks for the reply. I thought this thread was dead. Cam is ground to stock specs except overlap is less. It is worth a try to adjust looser. Why do you think noise went away when valves were adusted looser? Are you sure valve noise did bot simply mask other sound?

On Lou,s race engine's valve noise was so loud I would not have been able to hear other sound if it were there. I tried to listen for it.
