hello everybody,
I have a 1982 gran fury with a three speed auto trans no overdrive and a 225 /6 i cant seem to find what rear end is common with this set up.

the car has 224,000 miles and the rear end is on its way out.
does any one here know from experience what the best rear end for this car with this motor is, and what other vehicles have similar or identical rear axles and leaf springs.

if i have to replace the rear end i plan on replacing the leaf springs also due to them being beyond straight

any advice on this matter is much appreciated

Nathan,

Looks like 2.94s are very common. Of course this would be a good time to think through how you use your car, and perhaps select a ratio that works for you.

You can use any FMJ rear end, Gran Fury/Diplomat typically had an 8 1/4" rear end and some HD versions and severe duty cop cars had 9 1/4" rears.
Here the city used Gran Furies equipped with the 318 4 barrel and the rear was an 8 1/4" 3.21 sure grip. The 8 1/4" for these cars in this era could come with anything from 2.24 up to 3.21 stock, 8 1/4" rears are common in other applications and gears can be had out of trucks up to 1996 with other ratios. The most common ratios for bigger cars will be 2.76, typically 2.94 in the wagons, and optional 3.21 if lucky.

You will have to crawl under the rear of the car and take a picture of the axle cover and we can help you ID it if you are having trouble with one of the axle ID websites. In a nutshell though 8 1/4" will be 10 bolts and oval, 9 1/4" will be an octagon with 12 bolts...I'd worry if for some reason it had a late 7 1/4"...

what is a good site to post pics on here.
I will do my best to post some tomorrow of the axle and the car

if it helps any the car does good below 55 any faster and the rpms really start to pick up I try to avoid sustained speeds above about 60 for to long like freeway driving but mostly the car is driven around town it sees some pizza delivery use also like some as in 24,000 miles in a year and a half.

would a dodge dakoda axle fit under this car if not what vehicles have axles that would fit if any I don't want to have to buy it new $$$$

There is a really good chance there is a metal tag with your gear ratio.
