My baby is pristine on the outside. But under the hood she's not the sexiest. Ive had *Lillian for almost a year now. She runs ok, could be better(but what couldn't). I have never broken into a full blown engine. I figure what a better engine to learn on than a slant 6.

I backed *Lillian into the garage and popped the hood off and took some pics for you folks. Hopefully it turns in to a good winter project.

Ive worked on a few motorcycles and a bit on my SUV. So I've tried to keep my goals realistic. My list goes as such for now....

- New hoses
- Some new electrical
- Engine gaskets
- Engine paint
- Dual Headers
- New intake/carb

Im certain that list will grow as it does in all projects. Im looking forward to testing myself and learning some new things. As well as my interactions with you fine folks.
When the time is right I will need to invest in a engine stand/lift.

I am in the very early stages of this project, so if there is any feedback or support please chime in. I live in south Austin and it would be awesome to meet some of you.

- Rusty

Wow, you have a nice car! Power brakes, power steering, optional fancy hubcaps, AC, optional fender top turn signals, everything but the vinyl top!

Probably the best thing you can do right now is make a realistic decision of how you are going to use the car because that will dictate what modifications you should do. Is this a drag car? A weekend cruiser? A daily driver grocery getter?

Nice car there Russ225, and welcome to the site.

To add to Reed’s comments, if you haven’t already, get a copy of your car’s Factory Service Manual, it will help your learning curve, and make living with your green baby so much more enjoyable.

Love the car and the name.

That list is a good start. Here are some others which are important:

1. Flush block when changing out hoses.
2. Power bleed brakes and fill with fresh fluid. Replace any lines that look bad, especially flex.
3. Change tranny fluid and filter.
4. Consider disk brake conversion in front. If brakes are 9", upgrade to 10's in rear.
5. Drain and fill rear.
6. Change out power steering fluid.
7. Electronic ignition upgrade.

If you wish to keep it all stock, replace wiring harnesses. If not, there are ways to improve the efficiency of the stock set up, given its age.

Glad to have you on board.

Sam

Funny you say that, Olivia is the name of one of my motorcycle's haha.
Lillian is her name, named after my great grandmother. Between Lillian, Olivia(81' XS400) and Pippa(78' XS650) I easily mix them up. Correcting that now 0_o

Thanks for all the input fellas. When I moved I left my jack and jack stands at my old place. Next trip home I'll scoop them up. Picking up a new set of ratchets this weekend and more socket holders. I don't have a work bench here at my new house so that is also on my list of things to fab/build. Looking forward to keeping you guys posted on the progress!

Also I have two factory manuals for the car, so on that note I'm covered.

Set up right you can pull the engine without removing the hood. Been there done that!
