I bought a rebuilt head from Doc and was installing my exhaust and intake manifolds tonight.

Kept trying to install the nut/brass ring combo on the first exhaust manifold stud on top, next to the water elbow outlet. The flex nut just doesn't want to thread on.

What's a good way to fix the situation without having to take everything apart and remove/replace the stud?

I think it's the end, which looks a mite 'unthreaded', and is causing the flex nut not to catch. Pressing on the nut as I turn doesn't seem to do any good. Any advice about what to do would be wlecomed, thanks.

Do you have a tap and die set? You could run that down the stud and make sure the threads are good. Or you could try a different nut first and see if it catches and chases the threads.

Dremel the last 1 or 2 threads off.

Then if you don't have a die, use a steel nut to straighten/fix the threads.

Taper the end on a 45 with a flat file to remove some of the threads and the nut will go right on......takes about two or three minutes.

I dont think that nut fits on there. I've noticed a few heads that have a different stud for that end one. Does the nut fit on to the other studs?

Manifold installation tip:

Always test fit of all nuts on studs before attempting to mount manifolds. Generally the buggered stud will always be the one with poorest access; Murphy ’s Law.

Thanks all, and AT - your recommendation to file the stud (don't know why I didn't think to do that) worked great.

Only thing I don't like is this stud appears shorter than the others, so now the nut is threaded on, but only 1/2 of the stud is through the nut, and I have a feeling I'm close to spec on it's tightness - we'll see.

Oh well, I'm not changing it out unless i have a problem.

If you do....I always use longer studs. Especially when using a RemFlex gasket. They are much thicker. I toss the stock studs.

Torque spec is like 15 inch lbs. Doubt you are gonna strip it out.
