I have been reading information from this site for several months, and I thought I would finally introduce myself. Last spring I purchased a 1972 Plymouth Scamp with a 225 slant 6. I believe the engine to be original to the car with only 35K miles. I have a great friend who has been a mechanic for 40 years who comes helps/teaches me. We have serviced the brakes, done an oil/filters change, adjusted the valves, swapped in a pertronix ignitor II unit and coil, changed to NGK plugs (without washers), tuned the carb (although he still thinks it is running rich and we may try to swap the jet one smaller). At this point I'm getting 18+ mpg and the engine runs smoothly. With the help of this board I used the recommended Mopar spray and the manifold heat control valve is working properly.

I have a metalic sounding rattle at higher rpms that sounds like a heat shield or something similar. That is the only unknown at this time.

I have two last items to address:

1) The brake master cylinder leaks from under the cap in the front (the rear brake chamber). I've been trying to stop the leak, but will probably just replace the master cylinder (manual drums). I live in the country and do not drive in traffic so no plans to swap in disks at this time.

2) I'm going to replace exhaust system, only because I want the glass pack sound. Based on what I've read I'm going to run 2.25 pipe from stock manifold all the way back.

I took the truck build too far in that I don't drive it as much as I should because I want to keep it "show" condition. I bought the Scamp to drive, and I drive it to work 2-3 days per week. I'm having a ball with it. Power steering and lower rear end gears make it a lot more comfortable than the truck!

Probably a good idea, I don't trust old master cylinders.

I also favor replacing old components, but if the car only has 35k miles you may be able to just replace the master cylinder cover gasket to stop the leak.

Replace the master. It is probably leaking internally and overfilling the rear brake chamber.

The metallic sound could possibly be the converter bolts hitting the tin cover on the trans. They are very close to start with, and if the cover gets moved/bent they will tap it.

How do you recommend I check the hypothesis about the converter bolts?

When changing master cylinder, do I have to pull mine to check the bore dimension? It seems I find several different bore dimensions on replacements.

Pull the dust cover and look for contact. You should see shiny places if it is hitting.

Master should just be a standard drum brake unit, oval top. (Unless it is a disc brake car)

I will check the converter bolts next time I have it jacked up. Thanks for the tip. When I search online for the master cylinder, the "stock replacement" for the manual brakes (no disks) is listed with different bores sizes by different manufactures....(?) I'll look again tomorrow and see if I was reading something wrong.

Thanks for the compliments. My intention with the Scamp is to build/finish it for ME, not judges or others. The fact is I wouldn't do a burn out if I could. A well running and reliable straight six, fits my personality well. I'm going to make some modifications for safety (lights, belts) but I'm not going to detail the engine bay. My friend who painted my truck is retiring and he agreed to respray the Scamp this Winter. If he wasn't retiring, I'd probably not paint it for a few more years. But I hate the thought of having to find another painter that I trust. It has already become my almost-daily driver, and I don't want to make it so nice that I shy away from driving it.

THAT is a damn nice lookin' car - love green!
