hello,

Recently I have been having waaaaay too much power assist in my steering in the 77 d200 truck.

it has no road feel any more and practically turns itself all the way to the right with just a touch of the wheel from center.

I did check the fluid level in the pump and it was quite low so I filled it up and there was no difference.. still super power sterling.

I am guessing that a check valve or some kind of regulating valve is hanging open or malfunctioning in the pump or the gear it self.

I haven't ever had this situation happen before so I wanted to know if it was the pump or gear that might be suspect.

I thought maybe the alignment might have been off but I have this over assisted problem when the truck is moving down the road or sitting still.

any suggestions or help in how to diagnose or fix would be appreciated.

good news is that Both the pump and gear ar available on rock auto ... I just need to find if I have standard or reverse rotation.

Thanks,

Greg

Take a look at FSM under power steering section (in 1967 edition) located under section 19, “Service in vehicleâ€￾, valve body recondition.

I had a time with my PS after getting car back on road acting as yours, and found adding PS conditioner made erratic steering response worse when trying to Band-Aid the problem.

The fix was to get a PS Valve body seal kit from Rock Auto, and remove valve body following FSM steps to recondition it. Then I flushed out old power steering fluid from gear and pump by running perhaps three or more quarts through system collecting dirty oil in a gallon jug from disconnected return line at pump until it looked clean. Final refill was brand name PS fluid with seal conditioner.

You may want to pull reservoir shell from pump body (see Power Steering Pump) section of FSM for details, and clean the screen and pressure relief valve. My pump shaft seal was not leaking, but the large reservoir “0â€￾ ring sealing it to pump body was. I located a three pack of replacement “0â€￾ rings at an industrial baring outlet for about three bucks. Cleaned and painted the whole shoot’en match before reinstalling in car.

Disclosure, I have the TRW pump

Thanks WJAJR,

Will do,

But this is a truck, not a car I hope that is the issue.

I am aware of that procedure on the car (chrysler Built) steering Boxes.

Not sure if that's the same on the Saginaw truck boxes?

We shall find out.

Greg, this article is about steering boxes for cars, and I don't know if it covers your steering box, but take a look at it for inspiration, if nothing else!

Yup same procedure far as I know. Your FSM should have all the details. That shuttle valve in valve body is sticking, and or valve is mal-adjusted. So clean valve, flush old nasty 30+ year old PS fluid, and happy motoring.

Pump will be a bit different than TRW etc round tank types, but can be flushed by removing return line at tank. I just performed this flush on the 82 LeBaron Saginsaw pump powered rack this winter.

A helper makes this flush a lot easer, and quicker.

Got this problem solved.

The 35year old saginaw box got loosey goosey and probably had some dirt and trash in the Valve body of the Steering Gear.

I ordered a New Standard Rotation Steering gear From Rockauto it's a Lares Corporation Rebuilt unit...

and I have now found again this wonderful concept called ROAD FEEL.

I did Flush the Pump and Correctly Prime the gear Before final assembly - Topped off the fluid and the blue truck should be ready for another 100,000 Miles :-)
