I'm wanting to identify the vacuum canisters that i've had on my truck...

The old canister #'s are 2875768

The new canister #'s are 8(I believe it was 8 hard to tell)7555(not sure on the last 5)74

I usually don't bother with that set of numbers. Take a look at the number stamped on the arm.
Example: 11x, 8.5x, 6.5x, are 22 degrees, 17 degrees and 13 degrees of advance from those...

The old canister had 8.5x on it...unfortunately i didn't know to loosen the canister to look at the new one i just wrote the #'s down stamped on the outside.

Do you know what x is the VC239? I was told that is the best one for a truck or van. I'm assuming for my truck i need one with less advance?

If you buy a brand new one (not one made 4+ years ago), the arm will be stamped 8.5x and has 17 degrees of advance at the crank, I use these in most applications as a good bread and butter can (and is a little less costly than the VC-184/185 cans).

I used a vacuum pump on my old canister and found out that it wasn't holding any vacuum. That explains the difference i'm seeing in how the truck is running now. I confirmed that the new canister is pulling vacuum and i've played around with some of the base timing

I've tried 8, 10, 12 and it runs better at 8...it doesn't pull as good at 12 but i feel like the truck runs better without the vacuum advance it seems like it's pulling too much vacuum too fast. Right now, i have the vacuum pot plugged and the base timing at 12 BTDC so at 2000 maybe 3000 rpms (i don't have an rpm gauge right now, quesstimating) it will go up to maybe 24 degrees of timing. So do i add the 24+12 and get 36 total timing? Or is 24 degrees my total timing?

I'm going to run it out on the highway tomorrow and see if i can do highway speeds without the vacuum advance. I just can't seem to get it to tune as smooth with the vacuum advance. It seems like this truck needs slow to moderate advance without a lot of total timing from what i can tell so far...

I took the reluctor off the old distributor and removed the pickup coil and mechanical advance plate. There was a metal clip that holds the pick coil to the mechanical plate and it had lost it's tension and wasn't holding it very well. I'll try and take a few pics and post them...i know that i can buy a replacement pickup coil wells CR103 off ebay for $9.50 do they usually come with the holding clip? Or where do you get those?

What is the lowest total vacuum advance canistor that will work with this distributor 30-3690?

The truck doesn't run too bad without vacuum advance. But i learned that the vacuum pots are adjustable, so i'm going to work with it a little bit and adjust the can to reduce the advance and see what kind of balance i get 8)

On my old canister i can tell that if you go counter clockwise it will cause the arm to be harder to push in and clockwise is easier and you can get about 6 full turns of adjustment

I worked with reducing the vacuum advance a little bit

One thing i noticed is that with vacuum if i'm going down a residential street in 2nd gear and hold the throttle to maintain 10 or 15 mph the truck will surge and jump...i don't seem to have this problem without vacuum advance

When i'm throttling down the road it runs smooth. It's just when trying to maintain slower speeds
