So i am having trouble getting my 72 scamp with a slant six to start. I cant get any spark to the distributor. I already replaced ignition coil, cap, ballestic ressistor and wires, points and condensor in distributor. I am getting the 12v to coil when trying to start but no spark. I tried testing the coil while starting the car using a screw driver to get spark, but no luck. Someone told me to replace the distributor and than it should all work . Even if the distributor is bad wouldnt i still get spark at coil right ? Also i have to try and start the car in nuetral, could that be the problem ? Could the timing being off make it not spark ?

You need to test the coil while it is disconnected from wiring harness. Here is an explanation of how a breaker point ignition system works.

I just went thru this with my truck...i don't know if you've read thru my experience but here's the link to the post

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53162

On my truck it has the electronic ignition with the magnetic pickup coil and my problem ended up being that the clip holding the pickup coil plate assembly together had lost it's tension and the pickup coil had play in it...which caused the air gap to be too big to send a spark to the plugs

I'm going to get a spark tester tool. You can get them as cheap as $3.99 on sale at harbor freight to help me next time with a spark ignition problem...i sure did get a good education this time around
