Ok, I smoked my fusiable link on the 67 Valiant almost 2 weeks after installing my Sony Explode CD player. The stereo was working fine until last Wednesday evening. It was raining so I had the wipers, headlights, defroster and stereo blasting. The stereo shut off and came back in several times and the ammeter was jumping all around. Yesterday morning I go out and the link is smoked.

Do I assume it was the addition of the stereo or just a 47 year old fuse link that needed to be replaced?

Any chance the wiper linkage was rubbing the wires for the stereo?
It sounds like you had a short.

No, I ran the wires to the fuse block just over the steering column and parking brake.
The stereo has been cutting in and out ever since. I haven't turned it on since I repaced the fusible link last evening. It ran fine Monday, I went out tuesday morning and it was dead.
