Hey Guys,

I did the SUper Six convertion, I rebuilt the Carter BBD 2bbl Carb, but not sure If I set the floats right :S

Slapped the carb on, it will start for about 30 seconds when it does or stutters up then cuts. It will start and run with the choke on, but when I open it up it dies. I'm unable to get the engine to run long enough to adjust the settings.

It has back fired or when it cuts it starts carb fires :S

Is it possible the floats, Any ideas?

When you did the conversion did you keep the same cam or change it? Have you adjusted the valves? Generally if it is firing through the carb that means exhaust and intake valve has to much overlap and is allowing exhaust to open while intake is firing.

I would recommend a remote start button and check your timing as quick as you can. It may also be your timing is to far advanced.

The first thing I would do is check for a vacuum leak. Did you follow the correct manifold installation procedure? See HERE.

Running with the choke closed but not open is a classic sign of a vacuum leak, as is backfire through the carburetor (known as a lean backfire).

I didn't change the cam or touch anything as it was running before the convertion. Granted not to well was the Carb was a 'make do with what I got' type situation. I think it may be more of a back firing/too much gas to o2.

It didn't do the flare up before, scared the dog pretty good though

Reed;

I've installed the Manifold correctly to my knowledge :?

The Vacuum leak is what I was thinking as I was running the list of things to go wrong.

I talked with one of my buddies and he said the same thing about checking for leaks.

So I'll have to check that out. Most likely going to pull it to confirm I tighted the thing right.

I seem to have lost my paper with the torqu specs on it, do any of you guys know them?

Check for bowing of carb base with a straight edge. If it is bowed, dress base flat with #10 or 12 millbastard file. Then install with new gasket, and torque down to spec.

Holley carb that was on my car when I got it was badly cupped causing a vacuum leak so big spraying carb cleaner at base did not indicate a leak.

If it was running fine before the conversion, I would say it is running too lean. It has a vacuum leak somewhere. That is why choking it is so crucial. Maybe a missing vacuum cap, wrong base gasket, etc....

Turns out to be a Choke/ mixture issue.

My dad desided to take a gander as the car is sitting in the middle of the 'U' of his Drive way.... I think he wants it not to be

He had to stop before he went to work, so he'll take another look for me tomorrow.
