Switching to HEI involves doing nothing to the 1984 wiring harness. You will have to build your own wiring harness from scratch using wires and terminals. However, since you need only four new wires, building a wiring harness for a new HEI ignition system is easy.

Like I said above, you need a wire from the HEI module to the (+) coil terminal, a wire from the HEI module to the coil (-) terminal, and the two wires that go from the HEI module to the distributor. That's it. You don't do anything to the rest of the wiring in your truck. The only place the HEI ignition wiring harness would touch any of the existing wiring harness in your truck would be at the coil (+) terminal.

Honestly, if this is causing you this much trepidation and grief you may be better off finding someone who is more comfortable doing vehicle wiring to fabricate something for you.
No grief, sorry if I come across that way

Since both the 1984 and 1986 wiring harnesses were from trucks equipped with computer controlled ignition and not standard electronic ignition, converting either harness to work with standard Mopar electronic ignition is more involved. Have to add the ignition control module as well as a ballast resistor and get a different coil. You also have to splice into the main switched ignition circuit.

Here is an article discussing how to convert from lean burn to standard Mopar electronic ignition. Ignore the reference to the "blue main ignition wire" since the wire on your truck is a different color. You will need to use a wiring diagram to trace which wire you need to splice into.
Thanks for that link, someone on the Ramcharger forum sent me the same, I will check it out

Well, it just sounds like doing electrical work is out of your comfort range. Which is fine, I am not a body person and would never even try to attempt it. Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. It seems like it might be psychologically and possibly financially easier for you to find someone who is comfortable switching out your ignition for you and paying them to do it.

How much of a rush are you in to get the ignition system sorted? I could probably put together an HEI ignition wiring harness for you but it would be a while before I could get to it. I don't know how long you need the leads to be, so I could only finish one end of each wire and you would have to trim them to fit and install the terminal on the other end of the wire.

I am in no big rush, I appreciate the offer and electrical has always been one of my weaknesses but that is only because at some point in the past I had some sort of negative experience with electrical and it left a bad taste in my gut that I cant seem to shake.

I need to continue plugging away at things I am hesitant to do so with and eventually I will end up on top of it.

If you were anywhere near me than I would pay you to come over help me ( not do it for me ) teach me some things and I would be very happy with this but I am going to assume you are somewhere over on the left side somewhere.

Thanks again though, I may for the time being stick a points dist in the truck to get it running, I did find again another parts truck in salvage yard today ( slant six 2 wheel drive ) that again had what looked like a brand new points dist in it, of course I grabbed it.

Hook the one wire up to negative side of coil and thats that. Cant get any easier than that.

In the meantime I will be reading up more about the different options and decide what I would like to do with ignition more permanently.

I bounce around alot, today I was hot on figuring out what the heck I needed to get my A/C operating, turns out I have been looking for the wrong compressor but the good news is that the correct compressor may still be avail.

Anyway I know you spent several hours helping me to understand the HEI deal and a few other things and it was again appreciated.

OK, I respect your decision. However, the HEI is only marginally more difficult than the points to install. Wire to coil positive, wire to coil negative, wires to distributor, mount module on fender, done.

Anyway, good luck with your truck. It should turn out well.
